Why Gears succeeds is because it does something new, and does it well. Most of Gears is played from a third-person perspective, but it still feels like a first-person shooter, with a huge emphasis on a cover system that largely defines the game. Each combat area is usually littered with large items that both you and your enemies will use for cover, so you peek out to fire off a few rounds and try to flank where possible. Rather than the run-and-gun that often defines most shooters, Gears is more aptly described as stop-and-pop, and it's the game's strongest element...In fact, everything about the game's presentation is top-notch, from the washed-out stylized art design to the feature-film level soundtrack that pounds away from start to finish. And that's really what Gears is all about: it's a slick, polished action film that you happen to play on your PC. If you're looking for a shooter with a smart take on combat, Gears will get your wheels turning. - Sal Accardo
