Cassandra Reilly (Judy Davis) is an American translator who has moved permanently to Barcelona. She's quite broke, though, so when a glamorous stranger asks for her help, she can't afford to refuse. The hot femme-fatale Frankie Stevens (Marcia Gay Harden) is another American in Barcelona. Her husband has disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and she asks Cassandra to help her find him. As she offers a significant amount of money for the assistance, Cassandra simply can't refuse. Soon she finds herself caught up in a web of mistaken identities, double-crossing families and a devilish kidnapping plot.

Barcelona has not turned out to be the romantic dreamland that Cassandra Reilly (Judy Davis) thought it would be. Nearly broke from her fledgling career as a translator, she is prepared to return to her American homeland when the beautiful and mysterious Frankie Stevens (Marcia Gay Harden) offers her an abnormally large sum of money. The cash will come to the disgruntled translator if she can help find Frankie's missing husband. What Cassandra does find is herself, caught up in a kidnapping case full of double crosses and lesbian femmes fatales. Susan Seidelman (SUBURBIA) directed this artfully designed mystery.
