 Editor's Note
In the 21st century, genetic engineering makes possible the creation of biologically superior human specimens ("valids"), who then grow to positions of power and prestige. Would-be astronaut Vincent (Ethan Hawke) born the old-fashioned way, can only hope for a janitorial position at the elite Gattaca Corporation--until he buys the blood, urine, and identity of a perfect but paralyzed athlete. But a murder in the company's ranks attracts the attention of a detective who threatens to sniff Vincent out.

This is one the finest movies I have seen in its ability to create a sense of yearning to be accepted, even at the expense of being someone else. The music is so well chosen and is very evocative of a constant yearning and when the two competing brothers swim into the sea - the sea comes alive and means that it is a representation of an area where genetic perfection cannot always win - the interlude scene between the main actor and actress- with the sea projected on a screen is also a nice effect. I felt very drawn into the characters and it was a really great script. The scenes where the main actor is scrubbing/scraping his skin to remove any chance that an imperfect part of him may be used against him - is heartbreaking, and makes the viewer realize to what extent the character is paying for in his daily life. Great movie. Recommend it highly. The best part about this film is that I viewed it on the DVD and the DVD is recorded in 2 formats - the standard and widscreen. The standard is so beautiful. This film is a superb example of Sci-Fi! It offers a glimpse of the future that could be and demonstrates the power of the human will. Moving, emotional and inspiring are just a few words to describe this dramatic motion picture. Was this review helpful?

A good semi-realistic sci-fi with a good story. However, there are some holes. First why does the astronaunt profession at GATTACA look like they are bankers. With the exception of the treadmill & human gyro scene, the main character spends most of the time in a business suit in front of a computer terminal. Even when they leave for space, they are in a three piece suit. Where are the astronaunt suits and actual training? Also what's with the retro 60s looking cars. Maybe it is just a fashion style in the film. When the main character undergoes an operation to increase height, wouldn't there be scars? It is also dissapointing that the real Jerome offs himself. Overall however, a good story about issues that may come up in the not too distant future. Was this review helpful?

Gattica explores a plausable future where genetic manipulation becomes the key to a person's future and those with naturally-selected genes are doomed to menial tasks. A lowly janitor proves that the human will and spirit can beat the system when (with the help of a genetically perfect but paraplegic conspirator) he decides to brave the rigors of Gattica to train for a space mission. A murder at Gattica threatens to expose him when the police find samples of his DNA and he becomes the prime suspect. Will he escape detection and go to the stars? Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Gattaca receives a thumbs up! Wednesday, June 09, 1999 Sean from Jacksonville, FL
Though most people won't appreciate this movie because they won't understand it, I found this movie to be very over-the-top. This movie will appeal to intellectual & softhearted viewers. THEME: A determined spirit will triumph over good genes in the future. Was this review helpful?
