| | Gerald Levert has sold nearly ten million records as a solo artist including 1998's platinum "Love & Consequences", with his group Levert, and as one-third of R&B supergroup LSG. On his new solo album "G", Gerald takes a very personal look at passion, love and life, on twelve ballads and R&B grooves that, as always, feature his powerful voice as the main attraction.

Outside producer Darrell Allamby captains the CD's first three tracks and stretches Gerald's voice; Allamby has him reaching for notes and provides fresh rhythms for G's soulful delivery, making the singer more acceptable to less mature ears. Gerald produces the next ten tracks and proves more adventuresome (with his voice) than Allamby by executing "Baby U Are" in falsetto. Allamby's tracks are phat, sure winners with "Application," the stronger but slower "Callin' Me," and "Nothin to Somethin." There's quiet storm fodder galore, including a smoldering duet with Kelly Price and the hitting "Mr. Too Damn Good," written with ex-Rude Boy Joe Little. ~ Andrew Hamilton | | Levert's reputation caught up with his lineage a long time before this 2000 release. The only thing the child of an O'Jay and leader of his surnamed band of brothers has to prove on G is that he can conjure up new ways to make the ladies swoon. No need to worry on that front, as G is sure to satisfy the candlelight-dinner plans of lovers and lovers of love around the world. What separates Levert from the crowd of R&B crooners is what allows most cream to rise to the top-the unique flavor of the man's vocals. | | On G, Levert lets his sugar flow over various portraits of love in bloom, love on the rocks, and the requisite assertions of self. He blasts his way through the brassy, brash "Application (I'm Looking for a New Love)," growls out "Callin' Me," and breathes life into the serene "Nothin' to Something." By the time Kelly Price drops in on the jacked-up ballad "It Hurts Too Much to Stay," there's no turning away from the sweet softness of Levert and his confectionary G. | Musical Guests | | Kelly Price |

| | Professional Reviews | | Entertainment Weekly (3/10/00, pp.71-2) - "...compelling tales of love - new, betrayed...enduring, and out of reach - on his fetching fourth solo CD....what he lacks in subtlety, he makes up for in heart." - Rating: BMuzik (4/00, p.106) - 4 out of 5 - "...this one sophisticated slice of laid back, smooth soul....its fresh approach in the lyric department...is its saving grace..." Vibe (11/99, p.198) - "...[This] seductively slick LP is full of deftly syncopated, state-of-the-street arrangements that are offset by candid, nicely gritty lyrics....[his] moonstruck spirit seems as familiar as a classic love song, and as timeless." |
