Following up his tremendously successful third full-length 400 Degreez with an album of similar themes and sounds, Juvenile relies on the Southern bounce style, heavy on the polished synth and percussion, to push his gangsta tales. ~ Keith Farley
Tha G-Code, the follow-up to Juvenile's smash breakthrough album, 400 Degreez, is a less inspired remake of its predecessor. The lead single, "U Understand," is clearly an attempt to replicate "Ha," one of the two major hits on 400 Degreez, while "I Got That Fire" feels like an attempt to replicate "Back That Azz Up." It's understandable that Juvenile and producer Mannie Fresh would revisit what worked last time, but unfortunately, the new material is inferior to the original. This is largely on account of Juvenile, who often sounds like he's going through the motions rather than coming up with fresh song ideas and raps. Fresh sound more inspired, though he also sound generic at times. Perhaps a rest between albums would have been beneficial, given the rate of activity of Juvenile (also a member of the Hot Boys) and Mannie Fresh (who was producing multiple albums a year -- on his own, without any secondary producers -- at this point in time). ~ Jason Birchmeier
THA G-CODE is the second album released in 1999 by Juvenile, the sometime Hot Boy and one in a long line of hip-hop guns for hire. This third career release stays Juvenile's course of pounding, dynamic beats, as he sends much love to some, while ripping on those who deserve not to dwell inside his world of cars, girls, more cars, and money, money, money.
While his lyrical content is in keeping with the well-hewn gangsta tradition, the unique, at times arrhythmic beats are what set Juvenile apart. These are not your typical Dre-style overlush backdrops, nor are they the Master P variety of dizzyingly off-kilter bleats; what Juvenile raps over here are some genuinely new sounds. Particularly enticing are the breakdown on "Never Had S***" and the mixed-and-matched funk on "F*** That Nigga." There's a constant pulse that drives THA G-CODE, one that makes clear that Juvenile has much more in store.
