| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | This is an excellent collection of Southern soul and funk from the late '60s through the mid-'70s, with tracks that don't always show up on compilations. The inconsistency is in the sequencing of the cuts, not in the quality of the music itself. The set doesn't quite flow, but the beauty of CDs is being able to program them any way that you want to. Some of what's here will certainly take the listener aback with its raw intensity: Tina Turner's burning, "Cussin', Cryin' and Carryin' On," Irma Thomas' rootsier, grittier, gumbo funky version of "Lady Marmalade," (that predated the LaBelle version), Fontella Bass' alternately gospel shout and bedroom slink in "Homewrecker," with its built-in backbone slip, and Barbara Mason's "The Ghetto," with its knife-edge walk between Muscle Shoals and funky Florida street groove. It's all killer. This is worth snagging just for the hot pink cover art; but the tunes won't let you down in and of themselves. The sequence almost plays better from middle to end, front to middle, but shake your own mix and see what happens. ~ Thom Jurek |
