| | | Freedom. Country. Honor. Passion. To save his best friend, one man must risk everything he loves. Features: DVD, Widescreen, Collector's Edition In the tradition of Braveheart and The English Patient comes this lavish screen epic that combines thrilling adventure, soaring romance and rousing battle sequences. Heath Ledger stars as Harry Feversham, a British soldier with a golden future--until he inexplicably resigns from his regiment. Harry is branded a coward, disowned by his family, his beautiful fiance (Kate Hudson) and his best friend (Wes Bentley). Heartbroken and abandoned, Harry receives news that his regiment has been brutally attacked by Sudanese rebels. Suddenly Harry's course becomes clear and he sets out on an unforgettable journey of redemption - to regain his honor, recapture his love, and save the lives of his comrades. "A rousing, panoramic adventure on a grand scale." Gene Shalit, Today Show "Splendidly spectacular, intelligent and very well-acted." Lou Lumenick, New York Post "Spectacular... lavish and exciting... thumbs up!" Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper "Has a lot to offer as grand entertainment, from surprising battle sequences (plenty of terror, virtually no gore, brief and tasteful digital enhancement) to fine performances." Gregory Weinkauf, New Times (L.A)
 Editor's Note
Based on the novel by A.E.W. Mason, this movie adaptation is the third of its kind, following 1939 and 1977 versions. It is the story of a British commander, Harry (Heath Ledger), who follows in his father's footsteps by joining the army. He is engaged to marry the woman of his dreams, Ethne (Kate Hudson), whose father was also a soldier. But when his regiment is to be sent to war in the Sudan, Harry gets nervous. On a whim, he resigns his post, and is instantly rebuffed by three of his closest friends. They each give him a feather symbolic of his fear. When he tells Ethne what he has done, she gives him the fourth, explaining that she cannot love a coward. Lost and alone, Harry cannot come to grips with what has happened. So he travels alone to the Sudan, hoping to in some way help his fellow countrymen and redeem his honor. What he finds instead is a land rife with slavery, brutal violence, and a deadly desert climate. He is befriended by Abou (Djimon Hounsou), a Sudanese wanderer, who saves Harry's life time after time. Director Shekhar Kapur (ELIZABETH) makes this moving adventure story utterly believable with striking photography by Robert Richardson and unmatchable performances from Ledger and Hounsou.

Wes Bentley is similarly strong as Ledger's best friend turned romantic rival, and Kapur makes the most of Africa's breathtaking desert, crafting a gorgeous spectacle that's at once stately and hyper-real. - Nathan Rabin
