 Editor's Note
Director Sam Raimi follows up his 1998 hit A SIMPLE PLAN with a movie that completes Mr. Costner's unofficial trilogy of baseball films. Told almost entirely in flashback, the film concerns an already legendary 40 year-old pitcher, Billy Chapel, pitching the last game of his career that also marks the end of what has been, at best, a mediocre season. Going up against the Yankees, Billy remembers, while on the mound, his failed affair with the woman he still loves (Preston). As the game unfolds and it becomes apparent that he's on track to pitch a perfect game, Billy begins to wonder if he can win her back, and if his ailing arm can make it through nine innings.

| | Professional Reviews | Variety "...Baseball fans will think they're in heaven: A [film] has finally nailed the actual playing of the Grand Old Game with remarkable realism..." 9/13-19/1999 p.41Total Film "...Stirring visuals and feelgood plot...An uplifting sports drama..." 07/01/2000 p.88 Box Office "...Raimi masterfully frames Costner's impressively accurate fastball and curve to convey the aging pitcher's intensity..." 11/01/1999 p.164 Los Angeles Times "...Costner is intrinsically convincing as a star athlete, and it's pleasant to notice how he's been able to improve his work within his specific range..." 09/17/1999 p.C1 San Franciso Chronicle 8 of 10 For Love of the Game is the splendid title of Costner's new baseball movie, which is in every respect a romance. It is a romance about a man and a woman, and it is a romance about baseball itself... Movies like this express big, real emotions that people may be reluctant to put into words. That's one thing Hollywood movies are supposed to do for us. Baseball isn't the only field of dreams. - Bob Graham James Berardinelli's ReelViews 7 of 10 The best parts of For Love of the Game are those that take place on the field. Crafted with respect for the game and an eye towards accuracy, they represent some of the most true-to-life baseball moments ever presented in a non-documentary form on celluloid... As baseball movies go, this one isn't a home run--it's more of a single or a double. But, as any fan knows, that's still a hit, and it can generate some excitement. Boxoffice Magazine 7 of 10 Like baseball itself, For Love of the Game inspires several types of emotions in its viewers while running its course--sometimes suspenseful, sometimes excruciatingly slow and sometimes able to capture the timelessness of a special part of life. - Francesca Dinglsasan

5 of 5 Great movie! Friday, March 10, 2000 mflesh from College Station, TX
If you're expecting this movie to be just about baseball, baseball, baseball, game after game, the winning streaks, the losing streaks, the players, the trades.........this movie is NOT for you. Instead, this movie deals more with the psychological aspects of a baseball player and his hardships. There are many flashbacks, so be aware of when they happen so that you don't get confused. Overall, GREAT movie. WELL worth the money. Was this review helpful?

Most movies are either gal or guy movies. Rarely does a film satisfy everyone, FOR LOVE OF THE GAME does exactly that.
Some may find fault with the way the movie is presented in flashback/current action progression. At the end of the movie, you understand it was the only way to deliver the Director's vision of a brilliant story.
Everything about the film is done as well as it could be done, I have never said that before. The acting is so incredible you hate for the movie to end. The Direction was flawless, and the cameras capture the feel of actually being on the Pitchers mound.
This movie is so good if you saw it with an enemy, you would probably hug at the end. If you see it with someone you like, who knows what might happen? Was this review helpful?
