Did you ever wish your pals Fred and Barney could pop out of their cartoons and come to life? Just shout, "Yabba Dabba Doo!" and your wish is granite! Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures team up with the director of Beethoven to bring you this hit, live-action motion picture about the "modern stone age family." John Goodman stars as Bedrock's loudest, most lovable resident and Rick Moranis is his bosom buddy Barney Rubble. Together with wives Wilma (Elizabeth Perkins) and Betty (Rosie O'Donnell), they're the coolest thing since the Ice Age! But look out, there's something rotten in the town of Bedrock...Scheming Cliff Vandercave (Kyle MacLachlan) and his accomplice, the slinky Miss Stone (Halle Berry), plan to steal a fortune from Slate and Co., but they need a stooge (Fred!) to take the rap. A sudden promotion--part of the pair's evil plot--lands Fred in the executive suite, and he and Wilma taste the snooty lifestyle of the rich and prehistoric. Meanwhile, Barney's luck takes a drastic turn for the worse. Will success spoil The Flintstones? Will their friendship with the Rubbles be destroyed forever? Will greedy Vandercave have the last laugh? Overflowing with dazzling special effects, non-stop fun, and music from the "B.C. 52s," The Flintstones features a special appearance by Elizabeth Taylor as Fred's mother-in-law, Pearl Slaghoople. It's "rock-solid entertainment...a brontosaurus-sized hit!" (Michael Medved, New York Post)

"Pre-historical, hysterical...great fun!"  Joel Siegel, Good Morning America
"...a bouncy concoction with an enthusiastic cast, including a surprisingly funny Taylor..."  Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide
"...a light-hearted kick..."  Scott Renshaw, Rec.Arts.Movies.Reviews

Editor's Note

Yabba dabba doo! That modern stone-age family is back and on the big screen in this live-action version of the beloved cartoon series. When Fred Flintstone (John Goodman) generously loans his pal Barney Rubble (Rick Moranis) enough money to adopt a child, Barney wants to return the favor. So he helps Fred on his IQ test at the quarry... which gets Fred an executive position. But what Fred doesn't know is he's the sap meant to take the fall for a bunch of corporate con-men out to rook the company. The all-star cast is rounded out by Elizabeth Perkins as Wilma Flintstone and Rosie O'Donnell as Betty Rubble, with special appearances by Halle Berry, Elizabeth Taylor, Jay Leno, and the B-52's.

Chicago Sun-Times 7 of 10
If "The Flintstones" had been able to devise a story as interesting as its production values, it would have been some kind of wonderful. This is a great-looking movie, a triumph of set design and special effects, creating a fantasy world halfway between suburbia and a prehistoric cartoon. The frame is filled with delightful and inventive notions, all based on the idea that modern America might somehow be reconstructed out of rocks. Just watching it is fun...Maybe kids just plain won't mind; they'll disregard the story and enjoy the stone age gags. But "The Flintstones" does so well with the hard part of creating its world that it's a shame the earlier part - putting a story into it - doesn't measure up. - Roger Ebert

Variety 8 of 10
Watching this fast-paced, advisedly brief confection is akin to taking a quick spin on the Universal Studios tour with a detour through the City Walk attraction, so loaded is it with technical gizmos, showbiz in-jokes and product plugs. In a day when popular movies have more in common with theme parks than old-school artistic traditions, this one fits right in...After the initial pleasure of seeing a cartoon world reinvented for live action, and well known toon characters becoming flesh and blood, there is little to really compel great interest, but the slew of filmmakers have come up with enough contempo references, little jokes and bits of business to keep things busy. - Todd McCarthy
