 Editor's Note
Loosely based on the book by Gregory McDonald, director Michael Ritchie's FLETCH is a laugh-out-loud comedy that features a classic performance by Chevy Chase, who stars as Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher, a crack investigative journalist who goes undercover for a story about possible connections between the L.A. police department and the local drug trade. He gets derailed when a Santa Monica businessman, Alan Stanwyk (Tim Matheson), mistakes him for a homeless man and offers him $50,000 to commit a murder. The man claims to have terminal bone cancer but can't commit suicide if he wants his family to collect on his insurance policy, so he wants Fletch to do his dirty work. Fletch pretends to accept the offer and finds that it leads him deeper into the heart of his own investigation. Working from a crackling script by Andrew Bergman, Chase relishes every line of dialogue written for his goofy, master-of-disguise character, making FLETCH one of the most influential and oft-quoted comedies of the 1980s.

5 of 5 You're not going to sing for us, are you Sammy? Tuesday, July 01, 2003 guest4254 from NJ
The thing I like most about this movie, is all the hidden subtleties, that you just don't get until you've watched it several times. And it seems that the more you watch it, the more little things you catch that you didn't notice before.
Definitely worth buying! It's like the "gift that keeps on giving, all year long". Was this review helpful?

Chevy IS BACK! In this movie he plays an investigative reporter, Erwin M. Fletcher, going by the byline of Jane Doe, who assumes multiple hilarious identities in order to solve the mystery of drug trafficking on the beach. The movie is plagued with classic Chevy humour where he is always three steps ahead of all other characters. This movie is overshadowed by a humorous desire that Fletch has to be a laker player, aside from slight concern over his job, his only real concern in this movie is what the spread is in the laker game, however, this does not become a focal point of the movie, it is just a funny note. I have watched this movie, literally, over 100 times and I still laugh every time I watch it. Probably my favorite comedy EVER! A MUST BUY. Was this review helpful?
