This is a great series. I have watched it through 4 times and still have not gotten tired of it. It makes me think the guys at Fox TV have their heads up their you know what. They did'nt even play the series episodes in order. Anyway it is a great ride and the movie Serenity is also great but watch the series first. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Writers, here is where we need a sequel Monday, March 24, 2008 gearhead4 from Woodridge, IL
Paramount did it for three generations with Star Trek. The Original Series faded out but was succeeded by the excellent Next Generation series that ran for 7 seasons and then still wouldn't die, followed by several movies and 3 spin offs.
Imagine where Firefly could go!!!
The morality is somewhat questionalble, but the characters are still being revealed. Captain Reynolds assembles a unlikely crew that runs like a well oiled machine. Zoe is a trusted second in command. The charming Kaylie can make anything perform like new, and as the Docter observed, always finds the positive in any situation. Her character (and the actress who portrays her) has me hopelessly charmed. Wash could outmaneuver the craftiest pilot. Shepard understands the value of a passive defense. River runs deep with suprizes and modest cunning.
The dark stories sparkle with wit and satisfy only until you become engaged in the next episode.
If someone will contract with the writers and sign up the original cast, I will be happy to put money up for producing the next chapter in the Firefly series.
The stories beg to be told! Was this review helpful?

Firefly wasn't this good on television, because after viewing the whole set of dvds I FINALLY got to see all the episodes in the order Joss intended them to be - and see amusing and informational special features as a bonus. Thanks for making this available. Was this review helpful?

Firefly is easily one of my top 3 favorite TV shows of all time. It has a great mix of sci-fi and western culture and style.

It's set far into the future when the "Earth-that-was" became overpopulated and its resources all tapped out. The human race had to relocate to other planets in a nearby solar system, all of which had to be teraformed to be habitable by man. Since each planet/moon was at first bare, being freshly teraformed, the settlers put there were left to establish themselves much like how the old West used to be. (This is where the clothing fashion comes into play. Everybody on the outer planets-- the frontier, so to say-- wears old western style clothing, even talking with southern accents and intonations.).

Most of the population of "Earth-that-was" took residence on the core planets, while the more free-spirited folk took to the outer planets of the solar system.

Then came the great war. The core planets of the solar system formed a government, the Alliance, and tried to force their reign of law onto all of the outer planets who were populated by the Independants. The Alliance won. With the Independants scattered and broken, Malcolm Reynolds, an Independant Sergeant in the war, bought himself a space ship with the idea that no matter what the Alliance did, he'd always have the freedom of the skies.

The plot of Firefly picks up after Mal builds a crew and travels around the galaxy taking up any freelance job they can get their hands on to make a buck to survive, be it a straight and legal job or, more likely than not, a smuggling, heist, or a rescue mission.

This series is very character driven. All of the main characters are interesting and fresh. Witty dialogue, action packed fight sequences, and the feel that even in the future things aren't going to change much makes this show a fan favorite. Add the Joss Whedon touch of humor and drama and this series is a must have for any sci-fi fan. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great show - so sorry it's off TV Wednesday, November 22, 2006 Siri from St. Louis
I found this series after it had been cancelled - watched Serenity the movie - then tracked down the show. Have been a long-time Joss Wheadon fan. Was amazed and extremely pleased with this show. Couldn't understand how it could have been cancelled so early. Clever, funny, and smart come to mind. I've watched it several times and enjoyed it more each time. Planning to buy some of these DVD's as Holiday gifts. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 I'm not even a fan of Sci-Fi... Wednesday, May 31, 2006 A Viewer from woodside, ny
and previously could never stand to watch a sci-fi series. But Firefly is the best TV I've ever seen in my life! I, like many others have missed the series when they were first aired (8pm on fridays sharing time with baseball?? no wonder i didn't even know about the show); and only when the movie Serenity came out I decided to check out Firefly (before seeing the movie). This show is so good that I was actually a little disappointed with the movie. After my grieving period was over (after practically memorizing every line on every episode), I'm checking out other sci-fi series to see if they're any good. But so far, none can even come close to Firefly. 'Doctor Who' on BBC remains as the only sci-fi I'm currently watching, even though some of its episodes are downright horrible. Firefly has everything. These characters are so perfectly matched for this story line. They should take away awards from people that cancel shows like this. Nathan Fillion rocks!!!! If I win the lottery, I am bringing this cast back together. Was this review helpful?

Wow. That's all I can say: wow.
I have never, ever seen a better TV series. Even if you don't normally like sci-fi, this is one to watch. Trust me on that one. It's about regular folks with regular problems.
I love it so much that I wish I had never seen it -- that way, I could watch it fresh all over again.
You really owe yourself a favor and get "Firefly." Was this review helpful?

Quite simply, this was one of the finest, if not the finest science fiction television show ever. I say this as a fan of both Babylon 5 and the new Battlestar Galactica. Firefly has become our measurement of quality. Worth it at twice the price. In addition to the amazing quality of the shows themselves, the commentary and extras are a cut above, easily doubling the rewatchability. Really, quite an amazing series cut short. It's well worth both your time and your money. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Series Virgin No Longer Thursday, April 13, 2006 Smitty from Seattle, WA
I never watched the series, (truthfully I never knew it existed) I saw the movie when it came out and thought that it was pretty good, but I could tell I was missing crucial background plotlines from the series. I just finished watching the entire series end to end(then the movie again) and I can't believe I waited this long. Well developed characters, storylines, action and settings. I "connected" with this show more than I have with any program in my life. FOX blew it when they cancelled this show, Joss Whedon (and crew) is fantastic! If you haven't seen the movie yet, watch the series first, it will make more sense. Was this review helpful?

I was seriously disappointed when Fox decided that no one was interested in the series and cancelled it. But then again, this is the network that cancelled Family Guy around the same time.
That said, going from watching this on the 26" tv I had back then, to the 109" projection tv I use now had brought a whole new life to the show. The visual and special effects are high quality, yet subtle enough not to require them to carry the show. That's done by the great writing and diverse characters that you can actually care about. My 16 year old was too young back then to remember the show, but is glued to it when we watch it now.
BTW, if you enjoy the show, the movie "Serenity" is a must see. Was this review helpful?

While I was already a fan of Joss Whedon when this showed aired, I do not get Fox and was unable to watch the show until it came out on DVD. I admit that I was a bit uncertain about a western set in space, but I figured that if anyone could pull it off, it was Whedon. When I finally got the DVDs, I was hooked before I even finished the first episode.
This show goes beyond genre. It isn't a western or a sci-fi - it is so much more. The characters are richly complex and surprisingly deep. The show is very dark, but maintains a humorous tone throughout. Yes, there are spaceships and gunfights, but the show is about people striving to maintain their own identity and freedom in a world (or galaxy) that demands conformity.
While I would certainly recommend this to fans of Buffy and Angel, there are no vampires. This show is distinctly different in plot and storyline. However, Whedon's skill with complex stories, clever dialogue, and surprising plot twists can be seen here as well. I have watched all of the episodes numerous times. Each time, I see things that I've missed. It is a brilliant show, and I am waiting not-so-patiently for the movie.
One note that might be relevant to some viewers. This show is written for a primarily adult audience. The primary objection that I have heard is that one of the main characters is a prostitute. The objection here is not due to inappropriate scenes, but rather the acceptance of her occupation as legitimate and respectable. Ironically, she is one of only two main charcters on the show who are viewed by their society as respectable. She belongs to the "Companion's Guild", and thus conforms to society's expectations. She is, in fact, highly respected and accepted into the higher levels of society. The rest of the cast survive by taking whatever jobs they can find - usually less than legal. They are outcasts because they refuse to conform to the totalitarian government. Of course, our dubious heroes find themselves facing moral dilemmas related both to the extent to which they will go to remain free and find food, as well as to their unintended invlovement in the plot of an evil corporation with mysterious ties to the goverment they distrust.
The shows strives to create a disenfranchised feel for crew of the ship. In filming, they sometimes use the glare of the sun, etc. to create this feel. While I understand their goal, I personally don't like this approach. I find the glare of light across the screen distracting, but that is only my opinion. I mention it only because it is the reason that I rated the cimematography as a four. Otherwise, I can't find anything to criticise about this show.
I enjoyed this show very much, and will continue to enjoy it for many years. I highly recommend it. Was this review helpful?

If you like Joss Whedon and his other series (Buffy, Angel), then you'll probably enjoy this series as well.
While it takes some time to get used to the idea of a "Western" set in outer space, the characters are very well developed and the humor is top notch. Once you are hooked on the series, it is hard to not thirst for more.

There are times when you see a movie or tv show or read a book and you just know - just know - that you've enjoyed an experience that you don't want to end. You don't want to leave the theater or you rush back to the book store hoping that there are other volumes on the shelf. And on occasion, a TV show grabs you and makes you look forward to the next show. "Firefly" is such a tv show.
Fox has been praised for its creativity, its determination to bring different programming to the small screen and quite often, it's ability to see greatness even if the audience takes a little while to come around. Then, there are the times that they act just like the other big networks and pull the plug when the ratings haven't been the best.
Firefly grabbed me and wouldn't let go. From the haunting theme song to the characters that were so complex and had so much promise, I just knew that once the audience was found, the show would last for several seasons. Alas, Fox was nearsighted and cancelled what should have been one of the greatest Sci-Fi shows in TV history. Am I over the top in my praise? No. The show had a humanity and a depth that was far better than anything else on the screen. There were so many future stories to tell and so many ways Serenity and her crew could have travelled the stars.
Buy this DVD set. Show it to your friends and family. Within the first few episodes you'll be hooked. You'll care about each one of the characters and wonder how their stories will evolve. You'll enjoy the humor and wit along with the twists and turns in the plotlines. And then, when you put the final disk on your player, you'll feel a little bit sad and angry that nearsighted executives took this wonderful, wonderful drama away from you.
Lastly, this series is one that the whole family can watch and enjoy together. My retired parents watched the episodes non-stop for three days and can't wait for the movie.

When I started watching Firefly I had low expectations... Scifi with a western flavor? The big selling point on Fox was that it was from Joss Whedon and unfortunately at the time I started watching I was not yet a Whedon fan. I enjoyed the first episode I saw and continued watching and then suddenly I realized that I was head over heals in love with this show! And then Fox in their infinite wisdom decided to cancel it... Firefly is wonderfully written, the stories are exciting and smart and you care deeply about the characters. I can't recommend this show highly enough. I will always be grateful for having found this wonderful show, even though I will always be sad that it was pulled off the air *way* too early. Through Firefly I have now become a devoted Joss Whedon fan and will watch anything he is involved in. Was this review helpful?
