New York Times "FILM GEEK has a likable premise, an unusual setting in downtown Portland, Ore., and a pleasantly indie feel." 02/10/2006 p.E13Entertainment Weekly "The movie has the unstyled swing of a cult pic in its no-frill production values. And in Malkasian, Westby finds a muse with Buster Keaton eyes." -- Grade: B 02/24/2006 p.46 FilmCritic.com 7 of 10 I suspect Film Geek will hold far more enjoyment for those of us in the business, but it's still a worthwhile comedy. Based in part on director James Westby's own life, Scotty (Melik Malkasian) works (naturally) as a clerk in a video store, runs a web page with zero hits, and can't get a date to save his life...Regardless, there's enough magic here to merit a viewing or two. I'm also curious if Westby, who's now made four low-budget movies starring Malkasian, might have something a little more grandiose in his repertoire. We'll see. - Christopher Null The Village Voice 5 of 10 Malkasian debases himself with gusto, but the film offers no new insights into a character type we've seen Kevin Smith do far more cleverly on numerous occasions. Westby never provides a reason you should pay to spend 70 minutes with Scotty, but he offers at least a dozen compelling ones not to. Just because lonely nerds masturbate constantly doesn't mean I need to see them do it over and over again. And while it's true that video clerks tend to look down their noses at customers' so-called bad taste, just about anything they might select would provide a less painful viewing experience than this. - Matt Singer
