Following the success of the first volume, Fifty Greatest Hawaii Music Albums Ever, Vol. 2 collects another 11 pieces from the albums designated as the greatest 50 in Hawaiian music by Honolulu magazine in 2004. The selections are fine ones, with a range of styles and names both known and unknown to those on the mainland. The album opens with relatively contemporary pieces from Cecilio and Kapono as well as the Ka'au Crater Boys, before showing off the mind-blowing falsetto of the legendary Auntie Genoa Keawe (holding high notes for a good 30 seconds at points). Classic guitar groups like the Makaha Sons and the Sons of Hawaii are represented by a couple tracks, as are the great culture-carrying crooners Alfred Apaka and Don Ho. There's little to argue with on the matter of these being among the greatest or most influential works in Hawaiian music. There isn't a great deal of slack key to be heard here, but the vocals and guitars provided are excellent. There aren't many opportunities to listen to some of the truly classic people here (like Auntie Genoa), so on that count alone the album is worth picking up. The more contemporary stylings are just gravy on top of that bit of classicism. ~ Adam Greenberg
