"I woke to the sound of a mosquito whinning in my left ear and of my mother screeching in my right..." (from the first line)

In 1793 the Cook Coffeehouse outside of Philadelphia is a haven for those fleeing from the fever sweeping across the mosquito-infested city. Fourteen-year-old Mattie Cook loses her childhood playmate to the fever and struggles to keep her family and its business alive.

Annotation:
In this work of historical fiction, 14-year-old Matilda Cook is caught in the 1793 Philadelphia yellow fever epidemic. When Matilda recovers from the illness, she attempts to find her missing mother and is taken in by a family friend--a freed slave named Eliza.

Author Bio
Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie Halse Anderson grew up in Syracuse, New York. Ever since she was a young girl, she loved to read books. Even though she tended to read many books at once (a habit that she still has!), her favorite book was J.R.R Tolkein's THE HOBBIT. Now that she's a role model for many young aspiring writers, Laurie has three important things that she thinks kids who want to write should know: 1.) Read everything you can get your hands on, 2.) Be kind to your English teachers, 3.) Don't be one of "those people" who just talks about being a writer--BE a writer! It seems that Laura followed her own advice, because her first young adult novel, SPEAK, was nominated for the 1999 National Book Award for Young People's Literature. When Laurie found out that she had been nominated, she felt "stunned, honored, grateful, giddy, bewildered, amazed, thrilled. And happy. Very happy." Laurie feels that the highest reward any author can receive is to know that he or she has written a good story. Besides this award-winning young adult novel, she has also written three picture books: NO TIME FOR MOTHER'S DAY, TURKEY POX, AND NDITO RUNS, all of which were received with praise. Laurie's favorite writers are Chris Crutcher, Francesca Lia Block, Karen Hesse, Karen Cushman, and Robert Cormier. A fun fact: her grandfather was a forest ranger.

— Gervase Markham
The English House Wife, 1668

As soon as I stepped into the kitchen, Mother started her lecture.

"Too much sleep is bad for your health, Matilda." She slipped a freshly made ball of butter into a stone crock. "It must be a grippe, a sleeping sickness."

I tried not to listen to her. I had not cleared the wax from my ears all summer, hoping it would soften her voice. It had not worked.

"You should be dosed with fish oil. When I was a girl..." She kept talking to herself as she carried a steaming pot of water outside to rinse the butter churn.

I sat down at the table. Our kitchen was larger than most, with an enormous hearth crowded with pots and kettles, and two bake ovens built into the bric
