He can be cynical and sarcastic, but he's also compassionate. The very ironic "Short People," for example, effectively used sarcasm to attack bigotry and prejudice, and Newman got his point across without being preachy. So if Newman's lyrics are such an important part of his artistry, is it possible for a worthwhile Newman tribute to be mostly instrumental? This CD (which was recorded in Germany and Slovenia in 2000) demonstrates that the answer is yes. Jazz instrumentalists have been paying homage to lyricists for a long time, and on Feels Like Home, acoustic pianist Steve Klink salutes Newman in a soul-jazz setting. "Dayton, Ohio 1903" and the title track feature singer Mia Znidaric, but most of the tracks are instrumental -- and Klink (who forms a piano trio with bassist Deitmar Fuhr and drummer Markus Rieck) favors a bluesy, churchy, earthy sort of pianism along the lines of Gene Harris and Ray Bryant. When Klink warmly interprets "Texas Girl at the Funeral of Her Father," "Lucinda," or "Short People," he reminds us that Newman is not only a brilliant lyricist -- he's also a composer of great melodies. That isn't to say that Klink is oblivious to Newman's talents as a lyricist. Lester "The Pres" Young, one of the most important saxophonists of all time, believed that instrumentalists should know the lyrics of the songs they're interpreting -- and Klink's very lyrical performances on Feels Like Home indicate that he feels the same way. Unfortunately, Newman's work hasn't received much attention from the jazz world, which often suffers from an appalling anti-rock myopia. But Klink, thankfully, doesn't have that problem, and his deep understanding of Newman's legacy makes Feels Like Home a thoughtful, highly rewarding soul-jazz disc. ~ Alex Henderson | Producer: Steve Klink; Stephan Meyer; Steve Klink; Stephan Meyner | Engineer: Reinhard Kobialka |
