The title THE ULTIMATE BEST OF FREDERICO FELLINI AND NINO ROTA doesn't exaggerate. Rota's lush, imaginative soundtracks to Fellini's lush, imaginative films represented one of the most perfect composer-director relationships in film history, and this fine collection is a testament to the fact.
Selections from LA STRADA, AMARCORD, SATYRICON, 8 «, and LA DOLCE VITA are all present in beautiful, full orchestration. While the selections obviously lose something taken from the original score, this compilation also gives listeners the rare chance to here several of Rota's most famous themes from various Fellini films under one cover. That chance is reason enough to pick up ULTIMATE BEST, especially for those seeking a primer on Rota's work for Fellini.
There are 126 themes and film cues included in this budget-priced import set. All of them except for the final cut were written by the great Italian composer Nino Rota, and were featured in the films of director Federico Fellini. There is little info included here except for titles, so for the novice who is just getting into Rota for the first time, this may be a bit out of context. One thing the set does have going for it is that these are not interpretations, but the actual orchestral and chamber music from the soundtracks themselves. This is not just some generic orchestra playing the composer's pieces. Rota himself conducted everything here. The recordings have been cleaned up considerably to make for a delightful hour of listening. Some of this music is hard to find on CD even now, therefore serious collectors might want to have a look and a listen. ~ Thom Jurek

Producer: Paolo Ruggeri (Compilation)

Artist Overview
Italian composer Nino Rota was a child prodigy, having created an oratorio and an opera before the age of 15. In addition to his film music career, Rota scored several operas and ballets, all of which expressed his dramatic panache. His bold musical expressions found favor with film director Federico Fellini, for whom he composed numerous scores. He was best known for his heartrending score for 1972's THE GODFATHER, though he won an Academy Award for 1974's THE GODFATHER PART II.
