In addition to his film music career, Rota scored several operas and ballets, all of which expressed his dramatic panache. His bold musical expressions found favor with film director Federico Fellini, for whom he composed numerous scores. He was best known for his heartrending score for 1972's THE GODFATHER, though he won an Academy Award for 1974's THE GODFATHER PART II.
