Notes & Personnel Info | | Personnel includes: Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway (vocals); Luther Vandross (background vocals). | | Issued mere months after the death of Donny Hathaway, this 1980 album was the second full-length collaboration between Roberta Flack and the troubled soul singer/pianist. Although the record is arguably eclipsed by Flack and Hathaway's initial duet outing in '72, it features a number of outstanding tracks, including the disco-tinged, Stevie Wonder-penned "You Are My Heaven" and the funky "Back Together Again," the uplifting theme song to their well-received reunion. Other highlights are "Only Heaven Can Wait (For You)," a slow, smooth number that showcases Flack's nuanced singing, and the breezy, dance-floor-oriented "Don't Make Me Wait Too Long." Despite these optimistic tunes, however, it's likely that Hathaway was in a considerably dark frame of mind during the recording process, since he committed suicide before the disc's completion, resulting in a very bittersweet album. The silver lining of ROBERTA FLACK FEATURING DONNY HATHAWAY is that it features backing vocals by Luther Vandross, who was on the verge of launching his own solo career, making it essential for dedicated followers of R&B/soul history. | Producer: Roberta Flack; Eric Mercury | Musical Guests | | Luther Vandross |
