 Editor's Note
FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS is a whirlwind of a movie, a wacky, drug-laden story backed by a fist-pumping rock & roll soundtrack featuring everything from Wayne Newton and Tom Jones to Combustible Edison and Dead Kennedys. Journalist Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) heads to Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, bringing along his Samoan lawyer, Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro), in this furious adaptation of the book by Hunter S. Thompson. It is 1971, and Duke and Gonzo are on their way to Sin City with a frightened hitchhiker (a nearly unrecognizable Tobey Maguire) and a trunkful of drugs, which they ingest nonstop. Depp is terrific as Duke, Thompson's alter ego, and Del Toro is a riot as the crazy lawyer. To perfect his Thompsonian performance, Depp spent a lot of time with the good doctor, and it paid off in a film that captures the frenetic pace of the counterculture novel. Director Terry Gilliam, a master of complex, bizarre visual imagery, has a field day interpreting the drug-hazed world in which Duke and Gonzo reside. An all-star cast chimes in with wonderfully offbeat bit parts, including Harry Dean Stanton, Gilliam regular Katherine Helmond, Flea, Cameron Diaz, Ellen Barkin, Christina Ricci, Gary Busey, Lyle Lovett, and others.

Although dismissed by critics and audiences, this gem of a film is a shocking indictment on what we take for granted in our contemporary society. In an age where pursuit of happiness supercedes any acknowlegement of consequences, Fear and Loathing in Las Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Wanna' take a trip? Friday, December 31, 1999 A Viewer from Jamul CA
after viewing this film, i was left in a confused and disoriented state of wonder. Raul Duke is the epitome of the drug influenced child-world dominator. their trips are unique, and totaly hillarious to watch. i personaly loved every minute of this 'out there' but 'groovy' trip to Las Vegas. everyone should watch this movie, it rules. 5 of 5 Sunday, November 28, 1999 smartguypatrol from Martinez Ca
Johnny Depp comes alive as Raoul Duke (an alias for Hunter S. Thompson) as he and Dr.Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) run a 'savage burn' on several Las Vegas hotels. While Raoul is in search of 'the
American dream' he is testing out 'gonzo journalism'. Though most of the adventure is Terry Gilliam's interpretations of drug induced hallucinations and just plain 'bad craziness'. Many familiar faces are thrown into the mix including Gary Busey, Cameron Diaz, and Christina Ricci. Fans of William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg will love this Movie, and those who aren't fans, will soon be. Thompson has truly changed my life. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 More than just drug humor: a laugh riot. Sunday, November 07, 1999 A Viewer from Dayton, OH
Some say it's the worst movie ever. Some love it. F&L is absolutely hilarious, and so bizarre that to some people it actually makes sense. I won't throw my opinion in here other than to say I love this movie, but I'll just implore anyone who's read the book (and liked it) to immediately buy this movie for a trip they'll never forget. 5 of 5 Don't Forget Hunter Thursday, October 28, 1999 A Viewer from Nacogdoches, TX
An often overlooked fact by the casual younger viewer is that this story came from actual writings during a drug-fest by journalist Hunter S. Thompson. If you get this movie (and I recommend that you do) be prepared for one bad thing - Fear and Loathing has the WORST sound of any movie I have ever seen. That aside, it is a wonderful piece of work, both in the writing and in Johnny Depp's portrayal of Thompson. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fear and loathing is not to be missed Friday, October 22, 1999 Brian Goldstein from Albany NY
If you are a fan of the book you will love this movie. I have seen Hunter speak in person three times and Johnny Depp plays a perfect Hunter. It is a must see for anyone who is a fan of the 70's scene. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Bill Murry, eat your heart out... Wednesday, October 13, 1999 LrdOfDead1 from Canton, Massachusetts
This movie is jam packed with laughs. A definate pause for a breath flick. To those of the late 60s and early 70s, this should just be like one of those acid flashbacks you get every so often when exercising too hard. This movie, I feel, had really no plot except drugs, destruction, and making a complete fool out of yourself in the process of the before mentioned. A definate must see. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fear and Loathing... What a trippin ride. Sunday, June 27, 1999 Adam Sikes from Live Oak, Florida
This movie was an laugh until you hurt movie. Depp played a new style role as a 1970's reporter
that is on his way to vegas. On his way he does almost every drug know to man and some new ones. His outlook on the world as he is trippin is just to much. You must watch this...I Recomend Glassy Eye for more good clean drug humour. Was this review helpful?
