| | | The Bride gets the THRILLS! Father gets the BILLS! Features: DVD Rice litters the floor. Empty bottles are scattered like glass soldiers who gave their all. "I would like to say a few words about weddings," a weary man says. And what follows is a warm, witty look at what it means to be Father Of The Bride. Spencer Tracy is the father and Elizabeth Taylor the bride in this lively Vincente Minnelli-directed comedy. Taylor, continuing her move to grown-up roles, is glowingly showcased--and reflected in three mirrors when first seen in her wedding gown. Tracy's amiably slow-burn performance captures every loving father's exasperations and joys as the big day approaches (it also captured for Tracy the fourth of his nine career Best Actor Academy Award nominations, while the film earned two other nominations for Best Picture and Screenplay). Here comes the bride, there goes dad's wallet...and everyone's heart. What sparkling fun! "...a fine family comedy..." At-A-Glance Film Reviews
 Editor's Note
The comic trials and tribulations that beset a family, mostly the father, prior to their daughter's wedding day. Taylor and Tracy give wonderful performances and it's easy to understand why this was remade in 1991. The colorized version doesn't add much. Academy Award Nominations: 3, including Best Picture, Best Actor-Spencer Tracy, Best Screenplay.
