Paul Walker stars as a rookie cop who goes undercover to find out exactly who is stealing the equipment. Posing as a racing team member, he manages to ingratiate himself with the team's leaders and even finds himself falling for Domenic's younger sister (played by Jordana Brewster). Editor's Note
THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS is a nitro-burning joyride that makes outstanding use of special effects, innovative camera work, and a nonstop throbbing soundtrack. From the opening sequence--a high-speed, high-tech truck robbery--the film never drops below the red line. Roaring along at breakneck speed, Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew meet on the streets of L.A. each night to show off their high-powered racers. When new guy Brian (Paul Walker) wants to add his fuel to the fire, he can't cough up the cash to race, but offers up his car as collateral. In their tiny jacked compacts, Dom, Brian, and Edwin (Ja Rule) burst into a high-gear race with Brian nearly beating perennial champion Dom. But in the final moments, he loses the race and his car. Brian's debt is quickly cleared, however, when he saves Dom both from the cops and from a potentially violent encounter with Johnny Tran (Rick Yune), a rival gang lord. Dom takes Brian under his wing--a decision that disgusts his gang but delights his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster). The gang never suspects that Brian is not who he seems: he is actually an undercover cop, and though he wishes otherwise, he's there to bust Dom for committing the armed truck robbery witnessed in the opening scenes.

The Movie: *2/5
To all those ppl who saw or who will see this movie, please don’t get the impression that what’s portrayed in the this movie is anything like the real street racing scene. I know this movie made a lot of money & lots of ppl liked it. But if you are actually a part of the import car scene & know anything about it, you would probably be a bit embarrassed by the way this movie portrays it. This movie is full of ridiculous inaccuracies & just plain made up crap. There are no “Motec System exhausts”, over using NOS does not make the floor-pan of your car drop out, and racing isn’t just about whoever can mindlessly hit the NOS button the most. In the extras, the director goes on to say that racers have no speedometers because they never take their eyes off the road & they have no rear view mirrors because they never look back. Where is he getting this stuff? Damn, maybe they don’t even have steering wheels because drag racing is in a straight line? Seriously, I drive a fairly modified ’94 Supra Twin Turbo & not only do I have a speedometer & large rear view mirror, but I don’t think I know a single Supra owner who doesn’t.
Bringing further embarrassment is the acting. Did Keanu have a little brother? Cos Paul Walker could be him. When Vin Diesel says “I live my life a quarter mile at a time…” it hurt me to watch it. Cos you know whichever clueless poser who wrote that line was thinking, “Yeah this line is gonna sound so cool, it’s gonna be like the tagline of the whole film”. Unawares to the fact that in reality, it filled the movie full of cheese along with the million other lame lines.
Once you combine the outlandish inaccuracies, poor writing, & poor acting, you get a cheesy movie that refuses to be taken seriously. In the end, this is one “poser” of an import racing movie. So you may be wondering, if you thought the movie was so weak, why did you buy it? Well first of all, the lead car is a Supra hehe. But seriously, the movie is still mildly enjoyable, due mainly to about 3 or 4 decent car scenes, the amazing video quality, & the insane DTS soundtrack. This is a reference quality home theater demo disc, it’s just not a quality movie. I can skip Keanu Jr. & jump straight into the race scenes.
The Video: *5/5
I have a fairly large TV & a very critical eye. Anything short of a near perfect video transfer is quite obvious to me. Fortunately Universal has delivered a pristine transfer. Along with Jurassic Park III, I feel Universal has been doing some great stuff. There is nary a scratch or grain on this DVD. Edge enhancement is non-evident & picture detail is right on, very sharp and clean. I was very impressed to say the least. The only shortcoming I can think of is more based on the director’s choice than the DVD authoring. For this movie the director has used a very yellow/orange/brown palette choice. So the DVD is a bit lopsided on the color spectrum, but it does carry a certain style.
The Audio: *5/5
Here’s the real star of the show. DTS 5.1 brings you right into the middle of the action. We all know that a car movie NEEDS those engine roars & exhaust notes to get things running. Not only do each car’s individual engine notes come through loud and clear, but you also get great details like the thunk of gear changes & blasts of blow off valve screams. The soundstage is well balanced, with good use of surrounds & plenty of low frequency effects. The music is also well matched to the movie with plenty of deep bass. My only gripe is that the mix seemed to me to be a bit excessive on the high frequency range, almost as if the treble had been boosted. Makes it a bit fatiguing when listening to for prolonged periods at high volume. But if your receiver has it, using the THX Re-EQ setting helps tame those highs.
The Extras: *3/5
One of the first things many ppl asked me about this DVD was the “6 hours” of extra features. I guess the commercial did it’s job. But in reality it’s not as much as you think. There’s some decent extras, but the making of documentary is the only worthwhile one. The deleted scenes are short, and I’m sure they counted the director commentary (which runs the length of the movie) as part of the 6 hour total. If there were really that incredibly many extra features, this would be a 2 disc set. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 OH YEAH!! Monday, January 07, 2002 WOW from CB, CO
You could mute the voices and it would still be an awesome flick. The best motor movie ever! Was this review helpful?

This is a great movie for car buffs, if you can overlook the laughable exageration of how great these import cars are. Now every kid on the street in a 4cyl import thinks he can beat a big block Mopar. Oh well, it's still a good movie. Let's hope in the sequel, they destroy a dime a dozen Acura (or whatever), instead of a classic Charger. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 My Next Gone in 60 Fix Sunday, January 06, 2002 A Viewer from Oxford, Ohio
After seeing Gone in 60 Seconds, an excellent car movie in it's own right, I needed something else. A man can only watch a DVD so many times before he needs something else. Then along comes The Fast and the Furious in the Theatres. I went and saw it and I was definately impressed then. Now, once again, the pleasure is back. Not only is the movie as good as I remember but with it comes directors commentary, Theatrical Trailer, Music Videos and so much more. This is definately worth it! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 One of the hottest movies ever made!!! Saturday, January 05, 2002 Dan from NJ
This movie has to be one of the most thrilling movies ever made. I love this movie...I've already seen about 5 times since I bought it. Get this movie...you won't regret it!!! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Faster than Furious Wednesday, January 02, 2002 The Doc from Florida
This movie is amazing for import racing fanatics and those just looking for a good time. This movie lacks certain plot elements with the whole "stealing from trucks" fiasco. They should have just stuck to racing. Otherwise, the car scenes are phenomenal. Was this review helpful?

For those who saw and loved "Gone in 60 Seconds", you will definately love this movie. Although this movie also has really nice sport cars and excellent looking women, I still think it is 10 times better than "Gone in 60 seconds"; with high speed chase and hot rodding scenes as to where the cars go well over 220 mph. This movie also has an excellent soundtrack, and not to mention, an excellent plot, that cannot be beat! I have seen it in the theatre five times, and I just bought it here at the best price I could find anywhere! I know that I will be watching this movie over and over again for the years to come. It was definately worth my time and it has always kept me on the edge of my seat! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 All good.... Friday, December 28, 2001 Dan from Meriden, CT
I saw this movie in the theaters. I thought it was awesome! The ONLY thing I didn't like was how unrealistic it was. The cars seemed to have 10 speed trannies when racing, and the races were like a minute long, when in reality a quarter mile race is usually around 8-11 seconds or so.. But you have to consider the fact that if they only raced for about 10 seconds, it would take away from the excitement. Another unrealistic thing was when the cop's car melted his intake or whatever, he seemed to just drive away and took off from the cops.. hmm.... but, it was still awesome. And the wheelie at the end topped it off!!!

Okay, First of all this movie is awsome!! Cool cars, hot woman, great action and a good soundtrack, but I think the storyline could of been better. A cop goes undercover to bust a group of people that steal electronics from simi trucks?? Kinda weak, but its still a kick ass movie. I saw it 3 times at the theater. If you like cool, fast cars buy this movie!!! I did. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 If only the DVD would have DTS sound... Tuesday, December 04, 2001 A Viewer from Mississippi
Oh well, it's still one hell of a good movie movie that everyone should own especially if you're a car lover like myself. So I can deal with Dolby Digital sound. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A Must Have for Your Collection Friday, November 30, 2001 Melayna from Dallas, TX
I went to this movie expecting cool cars and fast racing. I was pleasantly surprised by the story line and characters. I left wanting more and can't wait until the sequel comes out. While the movie may seem ideal for the male audience, this is one female who saw it more than once in the theatre and is planning on adding it to her collection. Was this review helpful?
