| Since they began back in 1985, the Farm Aid benefit concerts have featured an impressively eclectic lineup of artists, but FARM AID: VOLUME ONE LIVE, which celebrates the 15th anniversary of the first Farm Aid show, marks the first time any of those artists' performances have been released. As befits a charity founded by heartland rocker John Mellencamp, Canadian Neil Young, and country legend Willie Nelson, the music in this 2-CD set is literally all over the map: from California (Beach Boys) to New Orleans (Neville Brothers), to Canada (Bryan Adams), to Nashville (Deana Carter), and everywhere in between. | |
| Unsurprisingly, the three Farm Aid founders are the most heavily represented here, with three tracks each. Highlights include Mellencamp's incendiary version of "Rain On the Scarecrow," Young's touching Farm Aid anthem, "Last of His Kind," and Nelson's duet with Beck on the goofy "Peach-Picking Time Down in Georgia." Other standouts include Trisha Yearwood's funked-up version of "Wrong Side of Memphis," Keb' Mo's lovely, acoustic "Just Like You," and the Dave Matthews Band's crowd-pleasing rendition of "Crash Into You." VOLUME ONE LIVE is packed with great performances like these. | |
