I have absolutely no complaints about this drive. It doesn't get hot, it's quiet, and there's no annoying light to indicate it's on.
If you are considering this purchase, do so on the merit of the reviews, not the fact that there's a rebate. The rebate company is rumored to be awful (seriously, Google them and read the results yourself!). I purchased this drive in early August, sent the rebate towards the end of August. At the time, the rebate website said allow 5-6 weeks for processing. This week starts week 8. The website now says that processing takes 10-12 weeks and that a status update should be available after 6-7 weeks. I'm not holding my breath. At least I'm very pleased with my purchase! :) Was this review helpful?

Bought this as a back up after I learned the hard way about my laptops harddrive crashing. So dont put it off any longer and get one of these. Its light and doesnt get hot. Windows Vista had no problems recognizing it. The instruction tell you remove it through windows before shutting it down. Instructions dont tell you about the remove hardward icon. It lists another icon that wasnt in my tray. Maybe thats for XP but I had to use the remove hardware icon. Then it will tell you when you can remove it safely. Also for some reason I could not get the remove safely message. It was telling me the drive was in use. I ended it up having to disconnect it regardlessly. Shut the laptop down, and then waited til the drive stopped spinning. Then unplugged the drive cable. After that I get the message like I should. Have only been in used for a couple of weeks. Only backed up some pics, so I cant comment on the reliability of the unit. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Works fine Saturday, September 05, 2009 A Customer from Ocala, FL
I bought this ext. drive to keep my family videos and pictures backed up and also for future HD video and maybe a disk image when I get around to it. It is really plug and play. Hooked it up and started tranferring files. I did not use the software that came with it. The usb cable could be a little longer, but was not a problem as I do not leave the drive running and only turn it on when tranferring files at the end of day and keep the drive within arms reach. This is just the 3rd week I have had it, so cannot comment on the performance over the long run. Was this review helpful?

Computer recognized it right off the bat. Does not get hot and it's quiet since there is no fans. Using it as a video library with my Playstation 3 now. Was this review helpful?

I bought the Fantom GreenDrive for two purposes:
1) To store periodic image backups of my PCs for recovery purposes
2) To store daily backups of my important files.
This product provides the storage and performance to do both efficiently.
The drive is discovered automatically by both Vista and XP systems and comes preformatted and ready for use.
I use the free version of Macrium Reflect to do the disk image backups. The NTI Shadow software that comes with the drive is great for doing the daily file backups quickly.
I can think of no reason why anyone would not be satisfied with this product. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Just awesome drive - Software is worthless though Saturday, August 08, 2009 HowardH from New Jersey
On the Mac, Just initialize it, and make it a Time Machine backup disk. If you need more flexibility, use another backup utility. I was not impressed with the Shadow software that came with the drive. I now have 3 of these drives, and they are the best drives I have! They are quiet, they stop spinning when they are not in use, They wake up quickly when they are accessed again, and they run extremely cool, even while they are being heavily used. Not that it is a spectacular feat, but I've had the 1TB GreenDrive for six months now and have not had any problems with it. No problems getting it started right out of the box. Pure Plug 'n Play connectivity whenever we take it from the desktop and transport it with the laptop.
We use the GreenDrive as our movie storage drive, and I wasn't too happy with the USB connection speed. I put an eSATA card into my desktop and connected the GreenDrive that way. MUCH BETTER! Was this review helpful?

This is the 2nd Drives that I purchased to replace the 1st FANTOM drive 250gb has crashed for about over a year. When pluged it in into the USB port the drive got really HOT and USB cable smoked. I fingured that probably I got a BAD USB cable. Overall... It is a nice drive and nice design... Was this review helpful?

I've owned several external hard drives of all kinds. And this drive beats them all with Price/Storage/Performance. With it's Fan-less design, I no longer have to turn the drive off like I've had to with other external hard drives. Simply the best Bang for your buck. I wouldn't buy anything else but this if I need more storage memory. I've had this drive for over 4 month and I rarely turn my computer/drive off. Was this review helpful?

I purchased this drive with the hopes of expanding my storage space on my TimeWarner DVR (Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD). Extremely east to set up.
Just did these steps:
- Turned DVR off
- Connected the external drive via the esata cable
- Turned on external drive, then cable box
- Message came on the TV screen saying it found the drive and asked if I wanted to format it.
- After format completed, I rebooted the cable box and that was it.
My percent used went from 78% down to 11%. I've been using this drive for about two weeks now and have had no problems at all. Everything seems to work (pause, reverse, fast forward, etc.). Was this review helpful?

Drive works exactly as I would have expected. I did have to return the first one after I tried to use the Ninja software to encrypt the data. When trying to use the Ninja (perhaps the Chris Farley incarnation) on the drive, it made the PC blue screen when formatting, then made the drive unreadable. Finally, after subsequent repair attempts, the drive ended up spontaneously rebooting my PC upon USB connection. Second drive works great after NOT using Ninja software. NTI Backup software seems to work well. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Good drive Wednesday, May 13, 2009 A Customer from Rugby, ND
Drive works as was expected. I am using this to backup servers at work. Previously was done by a 6x80GB tape drive. I am sure I am using way less electricity now. Hooked up to USB and ran with no problems. Was this review helpful?
4 of 4 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 Good drive forgot the software Tuesday, May 12, 2009 Don from Nashua, NH
I purchased both the barebones version of this drive and this version that had the eSata cable and the backup software. The drive is excellent but save the money and buy the barebones version and buy your own eSata cable. The backup software is almost useless if you really want to make an image copy of your drive(s). If you just want to back up you application data, it might be acceptable but this isn't Norton Ghost (nor did I expect it to be). Again, hard drive itself on eSata has performed flawlessly. 5 of 5 Very Efficient Unit and Easy to Use Sunday, May 10, 2009 J.C. Nadal from Flanders, NJ
This external drive is very quiet and fast. I was able to set it up within minutes and able to back up my 250 gig hard drive within 10 to 15 minutes! I was looking for a "big name" external hard drive and found this one a a MUCH better price! I am very pleased with this purchase from buy.com Was this review helpful?

Hi: I bought this great green fantom drive because I have a Mac laptop with a broken internal drive, and the housing on my external drive has been broken for 2 years. So, basically I had a laptop in 2 pieces and one of those pieces in 2 pieces. So, solution, buy a 1TB Green Drive. Problem: I couldn't start up the Mac using the USB 2 connection. So, I went ahead and bought a 160Gb internal, and now I use this quiet, great drive strictly for mass storage and backup -- it's great, but I would have loved it even more if it had a FireWire 800 option.
