1 of 5 didn't work Sunday, June 21, 2009 A Customer from Saint Paul MN
This drive was inoperative right out of the box. Perhaps I got the one lemon, but be careful to try it our right away in case you need to return it. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 It's quiet, convenient, simple and "green&quo Saturday, June 20, 2009 Esq. from New York, NY
Very simple plug/play HD that we use as our office back up. My title says it all. I put green in quotes becasue I don't know that it is any more efficient than any other HD or that the difference is a big deal (maybe if more people use it the difference will be a factor), but it's a nice simple HD that is reliable. 5 of 5 Good So Far Friday, March 13, 2009 A Customer from West Palm Beach,, Florida
I've only had it for a couple of weeks but it worked fine. USB is a little slow but it backed up my computer with ease. Plus can't beat 2-year warranty. It's a little bulky too but that's doesn't bother me but some people don't like that. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 500GB of Backup Security--On the MARK. Tuesday, March 03, 2009 A Customer from Fayetteville, Arkansas
My new Fantom drive arrived when promised. Connected via USB (2.0) to my HP Laptop running Vista Home Premium and the drive worked immediately. I didn't like the FAT32 formatting of the Fantom drive, so I reformatted to NTFS (about a 4-hour process). Drive is quite, and reasonably fast (USB 2.0 speed limited)--note, although the drive has an ESATA port, an ESATA cable isn't included with the drive. Not a big deal, since I only wanted to backup my hard drive for peace of mind (previous laptop crashes and reloads very frustrating). Drive works great, has a green light behind the front panel some might find annoying, but since my cable modem, speakers, vonage modem and phone stand all have blue or green lights, it simply adds to the light show. I was apprehensive of buying my first Fantom external hard drive, but after two weeks, I've determined it was a wise choice...good price, good quality--highly recommend this product. 5 of 5 Greendrive delivers! Monday, January 19, 2009 Frank from Lititz, PA
I was looking for an inexpensive storage device for my backup needs. The Fantom Greendrive delivered. Setup was quick and scripting in Vista made the process seamless. I'll be buying more in due time. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 So Far So Good Thursday, January 15, 2009 A Customer from Little Rock, Arkansas
Hooked up easily via USB, silent operation, formatted NTFS in about 1 hour. Transferred backup files easily and has a power button for when not in use. Only used for backup once but seems to work fine. Owned for two weeks.
esata cable not included. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great Wednesday, December 03, 2008 Kevin Liang from Gaithersburg, Maryland
I received this drive Wednesday after ordering it the past friday. It was free shipping and it shipped all the way from california which is a very far distance. The 20 dollar rebate and 5% buy.com promotion code equaled a total cost of around 65 dollars for the drive which is very cheap compared to other drives. This drive is very sleek and stylish except the edges seem a little sharp so you might scrape yourself accidently. It also runs very smoothly but transfer slow through usb. It also does not come with the esata cable so you have to buy it separately. It's also formatted in FAT32 format which means its same format as a flashdrive. One limitation about this format is that it the max a single a file can be is 4gb. I am very satisfied with this purchase Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 works fine good price Monday, December 01, 2008 A Customer from nyc
The drive arrived quickly and was easy to install. The formatting took over an hour but that's because my computer is old and slow. It seems to be working fine -- I can't wait to put all my photos on it. I am happy with it and relieved to have a backup. Note that it is heavy, which would not be great if you plan to carry it around or travel with it. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Fine drive Friday, October 31, 2008 A Customer from Wayland, MA
Easy to install and use, and fast - no problems. Had to reformat to NTFS since it comes with FAT32 format - I discovered that when my backup program asked for a second filename after filling up a 4GB file, but that was easy to address. Recommended. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fantom 500GB Green drive Thursday, October 30, 2008 Jeff from Millersville, PA
I am very impressed with my first external hard drive. A great value for the money. I gave it a four on performance because it does take a while to transfer information from the computer, but maybe that's just because of the USB instead of the eSATA. It took about 5 hours to re-format into NTFS, so maybe you'll want to leave it to do that over night. I had to re-format from FAT32 to NTFS because the back up software on my computer (Vista Ultimate 64-bit) wouldn't back anything up unless it was in NTFS. But don't worry, reformatting is very easy, it tells you how to do it in the booklet. So the longest I had it on was during that reformatting (like I said, five, six hours) and the heat didn't worry me at all. I have tried it any longer than five hours yet, but I would imagine there wouldn't be any problem. For this price, you can't lose! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Can't go wrong for the money Wednesday, October 29, 2008 A Customer from Edgewood, NM
Quiet, runs warm but not hot. Set up was a piece of cake. Seems to me the vendor could have included an eSATA cable, but hey, I knew in advance and had ordered one along with the drive.
I bought this drive to use as an expander for my Tivo HD III, and it worked like a charm.
Hopefully the rebate will come through in a timely manner. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Concur with the 4-5 star reviews Tuesday, October 28, 2008 MGilli from Tampa, FL
Great value, especially when you include the rebate. A little bummed that the eSATA cable is an additional purchase but the speed with the USB has been managable for my use (storage of high res images, music files, etc...). Very easy set-up and the noise is minimal. So far, so good. I recommend. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great drive for the money! Saturday, October 25, 2008 Josh from Churchville, NY
I own 2 Fantom drives, this one and an older model 1TB drive.
Both have been great! They perform well, and seem very stable. I've used them on Windows XP and Vista and they always are just plug and play. I use them as a Video storage drive and backup.

Was a good price for a 500 GB hard drive, and earth friendly made it appealing. The casing is made of recycled material and uses less energy. It is fairly quiet. It does take longer than other hard drives to load onto a computer, but really I think it is worth it. Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 Great Value Thursday, September 18, 2008 A Customer from New Jersey
With $20 rebate, it's a great deal for anyone who needs extra spaces. Never used eSATA yet, but good to have one. Little bit heavy because of the aluminum casing. But looks good and sturdy. Easy to install. It took about 2 hours to format to NTSF. It's silent and no problems so far. (It took 8 days with free shipping. It was shipped from CA. So if you're in eastern, consider upgrade shipping) Was this review helpful?

1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Great drive Tuesday, September 16, 2008 Doc007 from Gray, TN
Works great. It is silent as long as you aren't accessing it. (as it doesn't have a fan because it's a uses a Western Digital "Green" drive which runs cooler and uses less power. I guess performance is fine for an external drive. Check the WD site if you want specs on that "green" drive. Should be great if you hoook it up with the eSATA. (don't pay $30 for a cable though, pay like $5 max) I would give another site but doubt Buy.com would post this then.
It's a great value (especially if you got the rebate with it)! Was this review helpful?

This drive installed quickly and easily, and runs cool and quiet. I was surprised that it was FAT formatted, and it took about a day for it to be completely reformatted to NTFS. But other than that, everything's been great. Was this review helpful?

This is an excellent external for those who just need more space to store files. It was extremely easy to use and is very quiet, plus so far I have never felt it get hot. For potential buyers, keep in mind that if you are planning on using the eSata capabilities of this drive, it does NOT come with an eSata cable, you'll have to purchase that separtely which will set you back at least $30 for a GOOD one. However the USB hook-up works just fine if a bit on the slow side. (ie. for a 750MB file it will take about a minute and a half to transfer). Even without the eSata however I still think it was a great value. I will definately recommend this drive. Was this review helpful?
3 of 3 customers found this review helpful. 3 of 5 Nice drive, but very slow Thursday, August 28, 2008 Paul Beck from Herndon, VA
Drive runs virtually silent and extremely cool. Performance is nothing to brag about. Formatting NTFS took several hours. Drive is rated at 60MB/s with USB 2.0. I transferred a 3.56 GB file from an onboard SATA drive, and it took 6.25 minutes, or about 9.7 MB/s. Was this review helpful?
