5 of 5 Fantom G-Force MegaDisk 1 TB USB 2.0 HD Monday, June 02, 2008 A Customer from Colorado Springs, CO
Drive was delivered as promised. I wanted to use for 4 Macs running Time Machine hooked up to a Time Capsule. Took me a couple of tries to figure out the formatting - Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) - but the drive has worked as advertised for one month at this point. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great product! Highly Recommended. Thursday, April 03, 2008 emtkopan from Murfreesboro, TN
This is the second drive I've purchased from Fantom. Not knowing much about them I was skeptical with the first drive but after having it for over a year without any problems I decided to purchase a much bigger drive for my backups. This drive is very quiet. I can hardly tell the fan is blowing. There is a blue led behind the grill which can be annoying depending on where you put the harddrive. Those darn lights can be annoying when you are trying to sleep so I put tape over mine. The blue light turn purple if there is a problem with the drive and I've only had once where it just wasn't recognized so I simply turned it off and back on and all was well. This Fantom worked better than the Seagate I had purchased and resold since I couldn't return it. I use mine connected to an Airport Extreme as a Time Machine backup and it works wonderfully, even networked and from outside my network just like my other Fantom drive. Don't hesitate to buy it at a good deal. Was this review helpful?

This unit contains two 500 GB drives in a single enclosure. The unit is quiet and pre-formatted and ready to run. The USB 2.0 interface performs as expected. I deleted the existing partition and installed a new partition and formatted it. The formatting takes 3-4 hours because of the size of the drive. Usable space is 931 GB. I have two of these units and will probably buy more. I'm very happy with them. Was this review helpful?

This is my second Fantom Hard drive to die, this one only lasted a few months. It did work right out of the box, although it is louder than any other drive I have bought in the past. After only 7 months the hard drive stopped spinning up. Total data loss. Still waiting to see if they will replace it. Was this review helpful?
2 of 5 Dubious trustworthiness. Monday, February 04, 2008 A Customer from Deer Park, WA
Value was a 5, performance was a 5, as well as overall satisfaction until all my data was lost. The drive failed within a month of use. It started by making a clicking sound as it powered up and I could hear the hard drive spinning like a racehorse. I had to send it in for repair (which means you loose your data). As far as the repair process, it was painless hassle free from the manufacturer. Quick turn around from sending to receiving back again. BUT - lost data is lost data! The whole purpose for this item is as a backup retrieval source. But now I am afraid to trust this for backup purposes. There are actually 2 500GB Seagate hard drives within the unit. 5 of 5 Big Drive, Little Price Tuesday, November 27, 2007 A Customer from Brandon FL
Seems solid after a few weeks. Zero set-up required for a G4 Mac. Since moved to Intel Mac and no added set up required. Next I'll try it connected to my Airport and access it remotely.
Only one connection in back, so no daisy-chain possible from here. New version has more. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 What a Bargain! And it Works! Tuesday, November 27, 2007 A Customer from Rhode Island
I've had lots of external drives before, and most of them have actually died (usually Maxtor, unfortunately). This Fantom drive is quiet and reliable, and in a much better designed and sturdy casing. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Works great! Tuesday, September 25, 2007 A Customer from Austin, MN
We are using it connected to our Cable box to store movies. It'll store about 100 Widescreen HDTV movies. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Gets the Job Done Wednesday, August 29, 2007 A Customer from Boston
I purchased this TG of space primarily for extra storage and so far everything has worked out great. The drive gets a tad noisy when it starts spinning but that is to be expected. I hide it under my desk behind my computer so I don’t hear it. Another annoyance that comes with it is the power cable will easily become unplugged, if you are moving it or slightly jiggle the cable. It is not held in tightly at all. Movie files stream off the storage perfectly. I already have 700GBs stored. But overall it gets the job done, and I am happy with it. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 As advertised Tuesday, August 14, 2007 Larry O from Green Valley, AZ
True PNP. No driver to load (with Windows XP).
Too bad there's no driver for W98SE so I could use it with my other machines.

Only thing I don't like is the stand. Great performance and value for the money. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great product at a great price Wednesday, August 08, 2007 Gary R. Lingner from Algonquin, IL
What can I say... It's 1 TeraByte! It's a steal at this price. It's two 500 Gig drives in one case, (and I hear that with a call to tech support you can run this as two separate drives, each with their own Drive letter on ONE cable) just by moving a jumper (maybe on my next one) without killing your warranty.
I haven't had it all that long, and just using it for bakups so the longevity has yet to prove it's-self... but I think this manufacturer means business, so I'll be surprised if the unit fails.
It comes with an in-line power-supply/block, so you only use one outlet on your power strip. Gotta love that! (even has a little LED on it) Very impressive!
The unit runs cool and is relatively quite. But if you really need to hear it you can always set it on an acoustic guitar body.
Some people have complained about the odd mounting feet. Hey, they're just odd, easy to get used to... personally I like them, but I like Paris Hilton, so go figure.
It has a blinding Blue Power LED and a Red (probably) Activity LED. The Blue goes well with most newer equipment, though it can be a bit distracting if you use it in a dark room (so... I have no windows... Oh, I'm switching to Linux instead of suffering Vista :shiver:). It works well with all loser versions of Micro$oft and the mighty Mac. Haven't tried it on my Linux boxes yet (Guess I should have waited to rate it for Linux, oh well).
Really no negatives with this unit. If you need a lot of storage for a decent price this unit is the way to go. It has a cool Industrial look and that's hott. So? What are you waiting for? Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 Lot's of room to store files but not compatible wi Monday, July 16, 2007 A Customer from Chicago, IL
I needed a drive to offload some large files from my Infrant (now Netgear) ReadyNAS. I hooked this up to the NAS and had nothing but problems. I then hooked it up to my PC (windows XP) and it worked flawlessly. The only downside is transfering files through the network is slow. It is even a little slow transfering files from the computer that it is hooked up to. I think if you are looking for an external drive to connect up to a PC, then this is a great choice for the money. It does exactly what it says it will do. I would be careful if you are trying to hook this up to a non-Windows computer, NAS, etc. Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Great value! Friday, June 29, 2007 A Customer from Conifer, Colorado
The drive installed in just a few minutes. It is a little noisy, but I was able to clone many virtual PC's and save various configurations for use when testing new software. I am impressed with the speed and the enormous amount of space. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Just what it said it is. A TB of storage... Sunday, June 24, 2007 cwamberg@aol.com from Torrance, CA
I agree with the other two previous reviews in that it is good value for the money. It fits into my briefcase snugly but then I have everything I want or need right there with me. For that reason alone it has done everything I could want it to do and more. I have folders for each of my desktops and both laptops. From there I have every file I could want.
