1 of 5 Didn't work for me Sunday, June 28, 2009 A Customer from Chicago IL
Based on all the good reviews here I bought this one but for some reason it didn't work for me. I put it for formatting to NTFS and after waiting for over 2 hours it failed. Then the drive was not accessible at all and froze my computer many times. I retried formatting it but the same outcome.
I'm not sure how well it worked for other folks here but I had to return mine. Was this review helpful?

I bought the drive several months ago. I've seen many other drives advertized, but this still remains the best value. I'm glad I've got plenty of space for backups. I forgot and missed the rebate window :-( Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 SLOW FORMATTING and data transfer Monday, June 22, 2009 Steve from irvine, ca
No one seems to have had this problem so perhaps it was me or my computer. The initial formatting was so slow that I stopped it 3 times before I finally let it run for 10 hours (yes 10 hours) before it finished. Later I transferred a full 80 gig drive to this one and it took 23 hours. Since then it has been flawless. The drive was not shipped, it was beamed over!! I ordered it on Monday and received it on Tuesday (the next day!!) and yes, that was the free shipping.
Bottom line, it seems a bit slow transferring large amounts of data. However, I recommend the drive and would buy it again. You can't beat the sale price. It is even less now than when I bought it. Was this review helpful?

Standard free delivery was super good - three days from order to having it left on my doorstep. Installation was easy as plugging it into laptop USB port running Windows Vista Home - shows up as drive F:. Starts and stops as expected. Moved to second PC running XP Home SP3 to backup files without incident; restored files to first PC. Attractive case, silent operation, tiny heat signature, intense "on" light, power switch readily accessible. Price was attractive, rebate was slow to come, but did get here. I would definitely recommend it to another buyer (and have). Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great deal --very happy.. Tuesday, June 02, 2009 Ian from Tucson, Arizona
Bought this drive to back-up files from my old computer for my new system, also wanted to use this to store my music, photos, etc, instead of on my actual computer drive. Very happy, easy install. Don't sweat the reformat, I reformatted before going to sleep and woke up and it was all ready to go. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Perfect for my needs Thursday, May 28, 2009 Brandon Moore from Fort Worth, TX
I wanted a drive to store pictures and other files from my wife's laptop and my desktop. This works perfect for that. Wife had no trouble setting it up and using it and I didn't either. Only hassle I had was sending away for the rebate, but its no different than any other mail-in rebate. Great buy. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A Great Product Monday, May 25, 2009 Amanda from Telford, TN

2 of 2 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 So nice I got a second one Wednesday, May 20, 2009 Brian from Memphis TN
In addition to the price being right, the capicity: huge, the size: small, the absolute best thing about this drive is that it is VERY QUIET.
I too had to format the drive(s) NTFS to hold files greater than 4G, and it took hhhhoooouuuurrrrsssssss, but since then it has been great.
I am using it on USB2.0, since I have no SATA connections. I realize that this is significantly slower than SATA, but it is significantly better than the EIDE drive that the OS is installed on.
I did buy a second one, but will hold out until the 1.5T drives are available at this price point. Should be any day now, as the internal drives now cost about the same per Gig for a 1T or a 1.5T. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 No complaints at all..... Wednesday, May 20, 2009 Matty from Warwick, RI
I've been using this for over a month now and I have nothing bad to say at all.. It's pretty quiet, it's not huge, and it was a great price. How can you beat that ?? Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 excellent value Wednesday, May 20, 2009 Gabriele from Bonaire, GA
I needed the extra storage space for pictures and home movies, and this drive is perfect for that. I connected it with an USB cable, so it's a little slow on large volume transfers, but for normal file swapping it's great. No problem connecting it to my Vista x64 laptop! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great external drive - runs quiet and cool Wednesday, May 20, 2009 Ozzie from Oxnard, CA
I bought this external drive, because it has an eSATA interface. It worked right out of the box, but to my surprise, it took over 3 hours to do a complete format. It's quiet and runs cool. Great buy, once I get my $20 rebate. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Efficient product. Wednesday, May 20, 2009 A Customer from South Salem, NY
This is the third fantom I have purchased. Two for Mac ibooks and for one iMac. I would recommend it to those seeking an external drive. I connected it to my iMac; and, it performs efficiently with the time machine. Was this review helpful?

Love this. I skimmed the instructions, plugged it in and away we went! So far, not problems, glitches, bumps or hiccups. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 This is a nice drive Tuesday, May 19, 2009 D Jones from St Louis
This is my second of this model. Have one running with ESATA connection and the latest one is USB. Power switch on back so will not power down with the computer, but that is not a problem. If I dont want to start it with the computer, I can use the power switch and not pull the connecter cable and fumble trying to find the port to reconnect. Blue light is reminder if on. Running one for over 6 months now and no problems. Nice Aluminum case and stays cool. They do have a 'green' model now w/2yr warranty. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great value and performance Monday, May 18, 2009 A Customer from Texas
This is the second Fantom 1TB Drive I've purchased and I could not be more pleased. Compared to other drives, especially this size, the Fantom is quiet, cool, and easy to just plug and play. It doesn't have any software for automatic back ups, etc. but that's really no big deal. I wanted a drive to store photos, music, video and other files and this drive fits the bill. Plug and play and it's part of your system. Excellent performance and costs. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fast shipping, works as expected Sunday, May 17, 2009 A Customer from Lewisville, Texas
Ordered on Sunday, received on Friday. Reformatted the drive from FAT32 to NTFS. It worked as expected without any problem. The construction seems solid. The aluminum case feels very sturdy. It is an excellent deal. Was this review helpful?
2 of 2 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Works as advertised Sunday, May 17, 2009 Carl from Winona MN
Had the drive for a couple of weeks. Have connected the drive to my Win XP Dell Dimension 8400 desktop (4 years old) and it worked right out of the box. I did do a quick format to NTFS. I also bought an eSATA bracket so that I could run the drive as eSATA. My motherboard has 4 SATA connecters (e means external thus external SATA). I connected to #3, changed the bios (F2 on boot) to turn on SATA #3, turned on the drive and it worked. The bracket from buy.com was a Tripp Lite SATA to eSATA transition cable P952-002 and the cable (drive comes with USB cable but not a eSATA cable) eSATA P950-36I. I did only one test backing up My Documents folder with eSATA and USB. The eSATa was marginally faster. The eSATA should be twice as fast (maybe 1/4 with my older SATA) on writes. Have yet to take the time to see if there needs to be changed settings to WinXP to improve performance with eSATA or if the limiting factor is hardware. If anyone does find out please let me know. May also try an eSATA board as I have a PCI Express slot, which is needed for the eSATA board. Keep in mind, if you want to use the external drive on more than one computer than USB 2.0 will probably be your most common connection. Was this review helpful?

3 of 3 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Worked great...until Friday, April 24, 2009 Anthony from San Diego, CA
The drive worked great when I plugged in via USB. It was about as fast as I expected but I wanted more speed so two weeks later I bought an esata cable and hooked it up. That's when the drive went coo coo!
Win2k insisted the drive wasn't formatted. I had formatted with NTFS and loaded 600GB of data with no problems...so all of that was erased somehow. I unplugged the power and the esata cable, hooked the USB back in and powered up. No change. The drive needed to be formatted again, thus erasing my files.
After formatting, the drive showed up as 31.8MB (MegaBytes)
wtf?
I called Micronet and an actual person was there!
The tech was very helpful, but concluded with an RMA and $9 worth of shipping out of my pocket.
I mailed the drive on April 17th.
It's April 24th and my drive showed up on my front porch. I plugged it in (USB) and formatted with NTFS. Capacity 931GB - used 93.5MB
Not sure what the 93.5MB is all about, but the drive is working now. The paper work in the shipping envelope stated that they replaced the hard drive. I'm not sure what went wrong with the first one, but I can't complain about their customer service. Friendly, prompt and best of all, FREE.
I'm loading files as I type and there are no problems.
I would recommend this drive and manufacturer. It's nice to deal with a company that actually cares and stands behind their products. I was going to give 3 stars, but their speedy and effective response changed my mind. 5 stars!!!!! *****

5 of 5 Great value; worked like a charm Saturday, April 18, 2009 A Customer from Draper, Utah
Great deal on this hard drive. I don't have esata yet, but at least it gives me the option. The drive itself is virtually silent and yet manages to run cool. It's actually much smaller than I expected compared to my Western Digital My Book 300GB drive. The front of this drive sports a VERY bright blue LED. Not bad on my desktop, but if I were using it on my home theater PC, I'd probably have to turn it so it faced backwards or put some black electrical tape over it. No big deal either way. Overall, a fantastic drive. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great product... Thursday, April 16, 2009 A Customer from NJ
Had a few issues re-formatting this device using VISTA, but, it was fairly simple with the XP edition desktop I had. Speed is decent, but, I'm mainly using it as a storage/backup device. So I just backup my data periodically and run it overnight.
works great! Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 I have 2x and both are great Wednesday, April 15, 2009 lautoka-fiji from Seattle, WA
This is the second one I purchased. It is a great drive, very quiet, and fast with the eSATA connection. I like the design, it takes up very little space on my desk, and if I wish I can stack them on their sides on top of my computer case. The external drive style is great, it keeps the drive outside of the hot case environment and if I need to take my data with me in an emergency I just grab the drive and run. I use one in always connected mode and the other as a data backup drive. This is my third fantom drive, the first one I purchased many years ago and it is still running strong. I definitely trust this brand. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 No problems whatsoever Wednesday, April 15, 2009 Mike H from Medina, OH
I read on another site that Fantom is just the case manufacturer - the hard drive inside is not made by them and is most likely made by one of the handful of companies whose name you would recognize (Seagate, Western Digital, etc.). I can not tell what brand of hard drive is inside the case on mine. The case could be opened, but doing so will void the warranty (there's a sticker over the screw).
In any case, the drive has performed flawlessly since I got it (about a month). It is as fast or faster than my other external drives and the aluminum case looks good and offers good protection for the drive (I don't know if the drive inside would survive the shock, but the case could be dropped off the table and not be damaged...). The case is also well ventilated.
The price is great (less than $100 after rebate) and I would not hesitate to buy another one and I would recommend it to anyone without reservation. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fast and quiet Tuesday, April 14, 2009 Mark C. from Minoa, NY
A great drive for the price ($90 after rebate). Initial format to NTFS took a while, but I was expecting that with a drive this size. Drive is very fast and responsive. A little bit of noise during heavy read/write cycles, but nothing to write home about. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 2 down. New drive to go Tuesday, April 14, 2009 A Customer from Sacramento, CA
Bought this drive and it crashed after 3 months. Replaced it under warranty (data all lost) and tonight it fell over and that was it. This was not dropped or anything. It was just bumped and being tall and slim fell over. I think I need to find something not quite so low end and something which will be more stable Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fantom 1 TByte HD - Great unit at Super Price Monday, April 13, 2009 A Customer from Hollywood, FL

5 of 5 Nice drive, No eSata cable supplied Monday, April 13, 2009 Eugene from WA
I have this drive for only about a week.
So far all is great. The chassis is very sturdy, dissipates heat easily. Almost silent operation.
The only thing is that in order to take advantage of eSATA interface you need to purchase your own eSATA cable. The vendor suplpies only USB. Oh, well..
I would buy another one when I need it.

Really this is the good one in the market. For me, i like the metal casing since i dropped it twice and it is still working fine. Its really light when compared to my old 500gb WD hard disk. Its real quiet and doesnt get heated up so quickly.Consumes less power compared to the old one. A no brainer. SATA makes it fast, it's quiet and simple to install. I've had experience with "losing everything I had" before, so I have a few terabyte backup drives; this one represents the best value and easilest use.
A solid bargain. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Unknown brand but with reliability of a long-stand Wednesday, April 08, 2009 momoxie from Van Nuys, CA
While it's still early to speak conclusively of the product's longevity, I'm going on three months now with this drive running fulltime and so far without a hitch. Frankly, that's better success than I've had in the past 12 months with two Seagates. So, sure, I've never heard of Fantom brand. But the drive is priced competitively, runs almost silently (incredibly quiet -- quietest hard drive I've ever owned), looks cool, and comes with a free nighlight (i.e., the bright blue power light everyone's talking about). 5 of 5 Hard Drive Review Friday, March 27, 2009 Cheryl from Franklin, VA
We have a PC that is still running Windows 2000 that has a dat tape backup that we use for our server backup. The dat tape backup hardware crashed. We decided that an external hard drive would best fit our company's needs so I started comparing prices & quality. We found both at Quill's, ordered it, received it, and it was up and running in less than 15 minutes. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great little drive! Wednesday, March 11, 2009 Ken J from Edmond OK
I purchased the drive to extend the capacity of my Digital Video Recorder on the Cox network after all attempts to gain additional capicity in the form of an updated DVR failed. The gentleman at Cox said the Atlanta DVR has an ESATA port on it for the purpose of extending recording time. I found and ordered the G force 1T drive immediately. It came, I hooked it up and the DVR requested to reformat it. I replied yes. Took it a couple of hours to reformat. The DVR 'saw' it as an extention to the network and now whereas I had about 95% of my DVR used up, I now have 6%! Only down side is that the Atlanta goes through a much longer boot cycle now so I have addressed that by simpy leaving the DVR on all the time. Was this review helpful?

Received the product quickly. I had to wait to use it until I got the esata cable. Once I did it took just hooking it up to the DVR and then unplugging the DVR and then turning it back it. The Scientific American DVR recognized it and after formatting it I now increased my DVR storage. The HDD works great but I have a few quibbles. The HDD does make noise when in use or recording but not loud enough to annoy. I do wish there was a way to turn off that blue light, it is pretty bright. Other than that for the price of the HDD it is a very good deal and would definitely think about buying a second or third one of the product. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Awesome product / service Friday, March 06, 2009 A Customer from Raleigh, NC
The USB cable was defective, but the manufacturer sent a replacement cable within a week. The only small nit I have with FANTOM drives is that the Windows XP system takes a long time to recognize them for some reason (in comparison to other brand drives). Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 For What its worth Tuesday, March 03, 2009 Mike from Hampton, Va
I'm in no way a IT head but I purchased the FANTOM XHD just to save photos and as a backup spot for my laptop. So far I haven;'t had any problems with it. I was a little confused when it took over 8 hrs to do a normal formate of the XHD, so I would just do a quick formate and be done. None the less, so far so good with my new toy. 5 of 5 Good drive for the price Monday, March 02, 2009 Mike from Sevierville TN
This is a good drive and is very small and compact (about the size of book). Very quiet and has ALOT of storage. Formating to NTFS took about 5-8 hours, but once it was done the drive was up and running with no problems. The light on the front is a little too bright for my taste, but a piece of black tape solves that problem really quick. I am pleased with it so far and you can't beat the price.
