| | | "When Andy Met Edie, Life Imitated Art." Features: DVD, Unrated Factory Girl imaginatively unfolds the comet-like rise and fall of 60s "It Girl" Edie Sedgwick, the blazing superstar who came to define both the glamour and the tragedy of our celebrity-obsessed culture. Sedgwick appeared to be the quintessential American princess, with her blue blood, her trust fund and her Harvard education, not to mention her ethereal beauty and vivacious charisma. But she was also a lost and fragile little girl; and when she met up with counter-culture anti-hero Andy Warhol, everything changed. Suddenly, Edie found herself at the center of a Pop Art universe bursting with sex, drugs, style and rock 'n' roll -- and a mad rush for fame and fabulousness that was destined to spin out of control.Arriving into the chaos of mid-60s New York, Edie (Sienna Miller) is taken under the wing of the famously deadpan artist Andy Warhol (Guy Pearce) who sees in her untamed vulnerability the makings of an irresistible muse. Warhol invites Edie into the wild world of The Factory, a former downtown hat factory he has transformed into a bohemian paradise. Here, a rag-tag mix of musicians, poets, artists, actors and misfits gather to create avant-garde movies during the day and throw glam parties all night long. Edie quickly ascends to become the star of Warhol's movies, an idol at The Factory and a media darling. She is on top of the world when she falls in love with a larger-than-life rock star (Hayden Christensen). But when Edie becomes caught between Warhol's world of sexy surfaces and her new love, she winds up rejected by both -- and once again, set adrift in the modern world. "Miller is wincingly good at playing up the innocence." Kyle Smith, New York Post "...a movie about power, and its spectacle is that of a woman losing all of it." Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

 | Factory Girl - DVD Review By: Jesse Hassenger - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 7/6/2007 4:15 PM | |
At the outset, Factory Girl looks like thin material for a biopic: It covers the life of Edie Sedgwick, a college dropout propelled to "it" girl status by Andy Warhol in the sixties, only to lose herself, as "it" people often do, to drugs and fresher faces. The movie starts with her leaving college, ends well before her death at age 28, and (intentionally or not) presents a convincing case that she didn't do much with the years in between.
But so many filmed biographies cram from childhood to old age, resulting in filmed Cliff Notes, or a mini-series at twice the speed and half the scenes. That Factory Girl doesn't have to cover an Edie Sedgwick comeback -- that she dies young and off-camera -- is a perverse relief....read the full review |

Here, a motley crew of poets, musicians, painters, actors and drug addicts gather to shoot avant-garde movies during the day and heroin at night....read the full review |

| | Professional Reviews | Box Office "[P]erformances are what save the day here, notably Sienna Miller's magnetic turn as title character Edie Sedgwick." 02/01/2007 p.73Entertainment Weekly "[Sienna Miller] looks so much like the actual Edie Sedgwick that you may think, at moments, that you're seeing the real thing." -- Grade: B- 02/16/2007 p.56 Total Film 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n undeniably affecting portrait of a life lived too fast, anchored by a star-making, layered performance from Sienna Miller..." 04/01/2007 p.42 Sight and Sound "Edie is a class act, and Sienna Miller embodies her chic, innate aristocracy convincingly....Guy Pearce is also note-perfect as Warhol..." 04/01/2007 58 ReelViews 6 of 10 Factory Girl presents the appearance of potential wasted - the potential to tell the heartbreaking story of one young woman's rocket to stardom and subsequent devastating plunge. Hickenlooper has the actress - Sienna Miller is at times beguiling and at times tragic and she never loses the camera's attention - but that's about all he has right. The movie ends up feeling superficial and mechanical. Warhol is a cut-and-dried villain rather than a complex individual. Edie is shortchanged by a screenplay that fast-forwards from one event to the next. The movie has only a 90 minute running time but the lack of dramatic tension makes it a long hour and a half. The historical Edie Sedgwick was a fascinating figure and at no time was she more interesting than when she was a member of Warhol's Factory. It's too bad Factory Girl fails to make this woman compelling in these circumstances. - James Berardinelli
