Best known from his gag TV appearances in which he gets (bloodlessly) squashed, pummelled and blasted like a Warner Brothers cartoon character, gravel-voiced daredevil Super Dave Osborne here tries to carry an entire comedy feature on his|accident-prone shoulders. A greedy pay-per-view tycoon sends a winsome female temptress, shuts down Super Dave's already-chintzy Vegas amusement park, and even grooms a young punk in imitation of Super Dave, all to force the famous stuntman, supposedly retired, into performing yet another ludicrous feat for the|cameras. This skipped being released by MGM in theaters late in 1999, and no wonder; the thin premise and slapsticky jokes work best on the small screen. In terms of PG-rated dumb humor for kids, Super Dave could make a suitable companion to the late Jim "Ernest P. Worrell" Varney and his many direct-to-video features.
Plot Summary
Stunt man Super Dave Osborne (comedian Bob Einstein, brother of Albert Brooks) was ubiquitous throughout the 80's, frequently appearing on Late Night with David Letterman and even on his own half-hour series on Showtime. Here, he parlays his stunts-gone-wrong schtick into a wacky full-length feature. Retired and broke, Dave nonetheless declines lucrative offers from a sleazy promoter (Hedaya) to perform more dangerous stunts, deciding instead to groom a protege he calls Super Dave Jr. When Jr. takes the bait from the promoter, however, Dave must rise to the occasion and demonstrate who the better stunt man is, in the process raising money for an ailing child named Timmy.
