Meet Andy Millman, Actor. Never forgets his lines because he never gets any. Andy (Ricky Gervais) is a desperate man. He's been an actor for five years but thanks to his useless agent (Stephen Merchant), he's never done any real acting. Instead, he's a lowly film extra, making his mark in the background while the stars do their work. His partner in arms is the pitiable Maggie, a fellow extra and a hopeless romantic. Andy may be an extra, but he's a star in his own right. Too bad nobody else agrees.

Having made his name with the popular comedy series THE OFFICE, British funnyman Ricky Gervais used his newfound fame to entice a cluster of huge stars to his next project. EXTRAS finds Gervais playing Andy Millman, a lowly extra who spends most of his life whiling away the hours on film and TV sets as he awaits a mercifully brief appearance in a new production. Millman's friend, Maggie (Ashley Jensen), is also an extra, and finds herself in a similar predicament. Most of the episodes find Millman sidling up to the biggest celebrity on set in a desperate attempt to get himself out of the extras business, but his lack of tact and his bad luck usually leave him right back where he started. Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Stiller, Kate Winslet, and a number of British TV celebrities such as Les Dennis and Ross Kemp all feature in this first season of the show.

HBO's monochromatic all-Hollywood spectrum of comedies has indulged in up-and-comers ("Entourage") and has-beens ("The Comeback") before reaching into the hasn't-been bin to deliver "Extras," the pay channel's best half-hour since "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Drenched in mortifying moments courtesy of "The Office" creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, it's an at-times painfully funny tribute to wannabes everywhere, with Gervais as a self-described "background artist" who will descend into all manner of humiliation and treachery to get any speaking part..."Extras" remains genuinely clever throughout. - Brian Lowry
