Capitalizing on the breakthrough success of the Grammy-winning Mountain High...Valley Low, this live disc from gospel star Yolanda Adams is every bit as bombastic as its predecessor was modest. That doesn't mean it doesn't occasionally work. On the contrary, Adams brings a power surge to many of the numbers, and on the studio version of "I Believe I Can Fly" with Gerald Levert mixes the spiritual and secular in the most divine of ways. ~ Michael Gallucci
1990s Gospel phenomenon Yolanda Adams's second live album (the first was the 1997 Grammy-nominated LIVE IN WASHINGTON) is about as high-gloss as it gets. If you weren't paying careful attention, you might not even notice that it's religiously themed; the opening "I Believe I Can Fly" (a studio duet with Gerald Levert) sounds more like the big romantic ballad from a hit movie than a paean to the Lord. (Hey, wait a minute--it was the big romantic ballad from a hit movie, specifically the Michael Jordan/Bugs Bunny vehicle SPACE JAM).
In any case, it's not long before the listener gets the message, as Adams sends her sultry alto soaring through a nice selection of songs from her hit album MOUNTAIN HIGH, VALLEY LOW, including "Open My Heart," which occasions some particularly serious testifying. The bottom line is that while the album's carefully calculated mix of gospel, hip-hop, and soul is designed for maximum crossover appeal, it undeniably works, and it should strike even the most secular of humanists as uplifting.

Artist Overview
Contemporary gospel singer Yolanda Adams hails from Houston, Texas, where she spent her young adulthood teaching, modeling, and singing in choirs. Adams's debut, JUST AS I AM, was released in 1987, followed by SAVE THE WORLD (1989), and MORE THAN A MELODY (1995). Adams continued recording and releasing albums into the late `90s when she had a commercial breakthrough with her major label debut, MOUNTAIN HIGH.VALLEY LOW (1999). The album went platinum and netted Adams a Grammy award. THE EXPERIENCE (2001), a live album, also won a Grammy, while that year's BELIEVE, 2005's DAY BY DAY, THE BEST OF ME (a greatest-hits package), and 2007's WHAT A WONDERFUL TIME, a holiday album, continued to enjoy impressive popularity and sales.
