4 of 5 Make an old P4 into a HTPC Wednesday, April 08, 2009 A Customer from Denver, CO
I bought this card to experiment with the Video Decode offload capabilities of VDPAU that were available in this card. I'm a linux type and work from the MythTV development branch that has recently implemented the ability to leverage this function. I was a bit wary since it was a PCI interface (would have preferred an AGP for this old box) but with some tuning efforts, it managed to pull off a decent 720P capable system against the TV Out and did fine on a 1680 x 1050 monitor via DVI.
The card is not strong enough to handle any other activity while rendering HD Video without generating scan related artifacts, but under Fedora 10 with svn 20321, it does a good job of playing frontend. This box also supports 2 pcHDTV tuner cards and manages to stream to 2 other frontends while both tuners are actively recording and a show is playing back from the same box. The PCI bus is at the edge of it bandwidth but it does manage to pull it off.
was a bit concerned about the buy.com low rating but so far so good. The down side to dealing with them is the wealth of junk offers that seem to show up and the fact that some of their other products are overpriced for the market. Hopefully, they will address this someday. Was this review helpful?
