For the soundtrack to Michel Gondry's acclaimed 2004 film about love and memory, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, composer Jon Brion contributes a pitch-perfect score that touches on both the melancholy and playful aspects of the movie. Lush string arrangements, dreamy keyboard melodies, and lo-fi acoustic guitar lines wax and wane throughout these selections, and Brion himself even turns in a rare vocal performance on the gentle "Strings That Tie to You." Rounding out the album are tracks by Beck (a wistful take of the Korgis' "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes"), the Polyphonic Spree (the uplifting "Light & Day" and "It's the Sun"), and others. Perhaps the most notable song on the soundtrack, however, isn't even featured in the movie. Electric Light Orchestra's giddily Beatlesque "Mr. Blue Sky" was only used in ETERNAL SUNSHINE's trailers, but this pop classic wonderfully balances out the album's more subdued passages.
