Notes & Personnel Info |  | Though there is a severe lack of liner notes, the music on the 2003 Fania release Estrellas de Fania, featuring the vocals of Celia Cruz, is still quite good. The album sounds as if it was recorded live with the Fania All-Stars, being that songs that weren't much a part of Cruz's solo repertoire ("Encantigo," "Diosa del Ritmo") have prominent positions on the record. Offsetting these are big hits, however, like "Bamboleo," "Guantanamera," and "Bemba Colora," and though the sound quality isn't pristine and has that big-stadium feel, the musicians themselves are exceptional, the horns bright and punctuated and the percussion complex and fast, not to mention Cruz's clean, expressive vocals. The most serious drawback by far is the fact that there is little information listed, and since there are compilations, both for the All-Stars and for Cruz, that do have better notation, Estrellas de Fania can be passed up without too much regret. ~ Marisa Brown |
