Funk have been compiled on dozens upon dozens of other discs. If you have even a small handful of basic funk overviews, the odds are high that you'll have absolutely no need for this. The comp is kind of bizarre in that it's so heavy on obvious picks, yet a handful of tracks are very second rate by a given group's standards -- for instance, "Stomp" would be a better beginner's pick for the Brothers Johnson, and about a dozen other Bar-Kays tracks would be preferable over "Freakshow on the Dance Floor." After Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up," the disc takes a huge chronological leap into the '90s with Blackstreet and Tony! Toni! Ton?!.
