We Know It's Big. We Measured.
A movie of epic proportions, Epic Movie centers on four unrelated orphans: One raised by a curator at the Louvre, another a refugee from a Mexican "libre" wrestling camp, the third a recent victim of snakes on her plane, and the fourth a "normal" resident of a mutant "X-community." The hapless quartet visits a chocolate factory, where they stumble into an enchanted wardrobe that transports them to the land of Gnarnia. There they meet a flamboyant pirate captain and the earnest students of wizardry - and join forces with, among others, a wise-but-horny lion to defeat the evil White Bitch of Gnarnia.

"...happily, Jennifer Coolidge and Fred Willard show up, as the White Bitch and Aslo the Lion, to add some easy, demented class.  A.O. Scott, The New York Times
"...SNL's Darrell Hammond is very good at impersonating Johnny Depp impersonating Keith Richards...  Joel Meares, FilmCritic.com

Editor's Note
From Jason Friedberg and Aaron Setzer (DATE MOVIE, SCARY MOVIE) comes this everything-in-the-kitchen-sink, blender-set-to-grind comedy, which pokes fun at big crowd-pleasers like WILLIE WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, SNAKES ON A PLANE, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, X-MEN, NACHO LIBRE, and THE DA VINCI CODE, among others. The loose plot involves a gang of teen orphans (including Jayma Mays and Faune A. Chambers) whose trip inside Wonka's candy factory leads them to a Narnia-style wardrobe adventure. Jennifer Coolidge is the evil White Bitch they have to tangle with in this new land, and Fred Willard plays Aslo, the lion. Scene-stealing Crispin Glover plays the Wonka-be, David Carradine breakdances, and the vivacious Carmen Elektra morphs enticingly in X-MEN-style blue body paint. A bevy of eerie look-alikes pose as Paris Hilton, Anna Paquin, Samuel Jackson, and P Diddy, among others. Of course there's raunch a-plenty with humor both scatological and shot-to-the-crotch-ish, to keep the MTV generation of all ages amused. The jokes come so fast that no one need worry if a gag here falls flat: another one is right behind to jump on its back. Best of all, the directors keep a tight ship on the bad language, as befits the PG-13 rating.

Expert Review Epic Movie (Unrated Edition) - DVD
By: Jason Morgan Cinema Blend DVD Reviews

The tough argument to make is that Epic Movie is the worst movie ever made because it never once tries to justify its own cinematic existence. It's merely content with endless pop-culture references and fart jokes. In fact, it might be the first DVD release of a movie that offers a "special" soundtrack to incorporates more bodily noises. Obviously, these producers are sick individuals who still spend most of their time hanging out in middle school bathrooms. ...read the full review
Expert Review Epic Movie - DVD Review

The stigma of "I've seen it all before" pervades Epic Movie in unexpected ways. Writers/directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer's previous credits, Scary Movie (as two of six writers) and Date Movie, tell you what you're in for: the skewering of some currently popular cinematic genre. Famous scenes will be re-shot, famous people lampooned, and there will be plenty of naughty bits. Experience might also alert you to the film's questionable quality....read the full review

San Francisco Chronicle 5 of 10
A picture like "Epic Movie" is always a kind of mystery, in that anyone with enough wherewithal to get a movie made -- who can pitch potential producers, steer a production, guide actors, etc. -- can't be a complete idiot. Yet, only a complete idiot could think "Epic Movie" is remotely funny or worth making at all -- or at least that's how it strikes me...The movie even indulges in a parody of "Snakes on a Plane." That movie is already ridiculous. It can't be made more ridiculous...Satire points up and emphasizes truths that have gone unnoticed, punctures pretension and tweaks the self-important. Audiences laugh at the unexpected revelation of truth. "Epic Movie" does none of that...The movie seems to have been made with kids in mind, in that all the films referenced are from the past 20 months or so. For adults, that's last week. - Mick LaSalle
