| | Professional Reviews | Entertainment Weekly "...[Paltrow's] signature style of youthful country freshness and city-chick sophistication are used to good advantage....A sunny tea party..." -- Rating:B 08/09/1996 p.43Variety "Gwyneth Paltrow shines brightly as Jane Austen's most endearing character... 06/17/1996 Rolling Stone "...McGrath's script is faithful: fierce when it needs to be and devilishly funny....[EMMA] showcases Paltrow's talent, wit and daring..." 08/22/1996 p.103-4 Chicago Sun-Times "...EMMA is a delightful film....Gwyneth Paltrow sparkles in the title role..." 08/09/1996 p.33 Premiere "McGregor's part is small, but he hits his marks." 05/01/2005 p.112 Time Magazine 8 of 10 ...Emma could conceivably vault Paltrow from her current status as bright ingenue to the top of the list of serious young actresses who combine Oscar eclat and box-office clout--a little Streep, a little Sandra Bullock. Anyway, Emma is a showcase part, handsomely played. - Richard Corliss The New York Times 8 of 10 With anachronistic snap bordering on irreverence, Douglas McGrath's agile first feature manages to be nearly as savvy as Clueless, the deliriously pop version of this story. Just as that film did, Emma turns the role of Austen's best-loved busybody into a showcase for a show-stopping young star. Gwyneth Paltrow makes a resplendent Emma, gliding through the film with an elegance and patrician wit that bring the young Katharine Hepburn to mind. - Janet Maslin

5 of 5 Love this movie Friday, April 24, 2009 A Viewer from West Coast, Florida
I love the whole set up, story line, plot and actors/actresses. The story line is hilarious, slow to start but when you listen to what they are saying it is easy to follow the story. The more I watch it, the more I hear that I missed before. It will be one of my all time favorites... Can watch it over and over again. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Jane Austin's stories are always good Friday, January 23, 2009 A Viewer from bernardsville,nj
One of Austin's best stories. All the acting's great. Paltrow is alright except it would have been more realistic/believable had they cast someone shorter and preferably with a natural British accent. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Horrible video quality Friday, March 21, 2008 A Viewer from Alpharetta, GA
Great movie, horrible transfer to DVD. Hopefully they will do a much better job when they go to Blu-ray. Was this review helpful?
