Cupid is armed and dangerous!

Features: DVD, Widescreen, Aspect Ratio 1.85:1, Dolby, Theatrical Version, Scene Access, Aspect Ratio 1.33:1

This delightfully fun and lighthearted comedy is based on the story that inspired the hit movie Clueless! Dazzling Gwyneth Paltrow (The Perfect Murder) shines as Emma--a mischievous young beauty who sets up her single friends. Funny thing is...she's not very good at it! So when Emma tries to find a man for Harriet (Toni Collette--Muriel's Wedding), she makes a hilariously tangled mess of everyone's lives. You'll enjoy all the comic confusion...until Emma herself falls in love, finally freeing everyone from her outrageously misguided attempts at matchmaking!

"Two thumbs up!"  Siskel & Ebert
"...a wonderful film..."  BoxOffice Magazine
"Devilishy funny!"  Rolling Stone
"Paltrow is delightful..."  Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide

Editor's Note

An elegant, deft adaptation of Jane Austen's 1816 comedy about a well-to-do young woman whose kindhearted attempts at matchmaking mask her own lack of romantic attachment. Academy Award Nominations: Best Original Musical or Comedy Score, Best Costume Design. Academy Awards: Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.

Plot Summary

This adaptation of the Jane Austen novel focuses on Emma, a meddling but well-meaning 21-year-old, who LOVES to play matchmaker. She's currently obsessed with finding the perfect man for her friend Harriet. But what appears to be a simple task becomes a nightmare, as Emma's machinations set off a chain reaction of misunderstandings between a number of people. Things only worsen when Emma attempts to set things straight.| Emma may -- or may not -- succeed in finding a mate for her pal. But what's more important is that Emma will learn a few things about herself in the process.

Time Magazine 8 of 10
...Emma could conceivably vault Paltrow from her current status as bright ingenue to the top of the list of serious young actresses who combine Oscar eclat and box-office clout--a little Streep, a little Sandra Bullock. Anyway, Emma is a showcase part, handsomely played. - Richard Corliss

The New York Times 8 of 10
With anachronistic snap bordering on irreverence, Douglas McGrath's agile first feature manages to be nearly as savvy as Clueless, the deliriously pop version of this story. Just as that film did, Emma turns the role of Austen's best-loved busybody into a showcase for a show-stopping young star. Gwyneth Paltrow makes a resplendent Emma, gliding through the film with an elegance and patrician wit that bring the young Katharine Hepburn to mind. - Janet Maslin

5 of 5 Love this movie Friday, April 24, 2009
A Viewer from West Coast, Florida

I love the whole set up, story line, plot and actors/actresses. The story line is hilarious, slow to start but when you listen to what they are saying it is easy to follow the story. The more I watch it, the more I hear that I missed before. It will be one of my all time favorites... Can watch it over and over again.

5 of 5 Jane Austin's stories are always good Friday, January 23, 2009

One of Austin's best stories. All the acting's great. Paltrow is alright except it would have been more realistic/believable had they cast someone shorter and preferably with a natural British accent.

After P&P, this is my favorite Jane Austin story. I love the characters, the plot is funny and entertaining but also teaches a valuable lesson.
