| | There was a time when country fans didn't listen to rock music and rock fans didn't listen to country. It was the way of the world and there was little room for exception. Today, every form borrows from those who came before. Rappers sample jazz and rock, while electronic artists re-envision Elvis. So it's no wonder that a number of respected country artists would tackle the genius that is Bob Dylan. This disc compiles the greatest countrified versions of Dylan ever recorded. Enjoy Dylan Country, a new collection of Bob Dylan's songs recorded by a pantheon of country music greats! The sixteen-track collection includes performances by Johnny Cash ("It Ain't Me Babe"), Willie Nelson ("Heartland"), Emmylou Harris ("When I Paint My Masterpiece"), Waylon Jennings, Buck Owens, and many more.

This isn't a disc of hat acts trying on the master songwriter's boots, it's strictly an old-school affair full of vintage recordings by country and bluegrass vets. DYLAN COUNTRY kicks off in a decidedly bluegrass vein, with Earl Scruggs (the instrumental "Nashville Skyline Rag") and the Country Gentlemen (the folky "Girl from the North Country"). Two genuine country outlaws (Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings) tackle a couple of Dylan's earliest love songs ("Don't Think Twice" and "It Ain't Me Babe," respectively)." The most unexpected moment is Bakersfield legend Buck Owens giving a rather un-country reading of Dylan's intense, poetic "Love Minus Zero/No Limit." The most unfamiliar song to most Dylanites will probably be "Heartland," a duet between Willie Nelson and the man himself, co-written by the pair for Willie's '93 album ACROSS THE BORDERLINE. As if all this weren't enough to bolster Dylan's country credibility, DYLAN COUNTRY closes with honky-tonk goddess Kitty Wells adding a Nashville lilt to "Forever Young." | Producer: Shawn Amos (Compilation) |

5 of 5 Total Twang Total Dylan Friday, May 21, 2004 A Listener from Phoenix, AZ
This has got such a great lineup of country music legends interpreting Dylan’s music, I don’t even know where to start.
Willie, Waylon, Johnny, Hank Jr., Buck Owens, Kitty Wells, the Byrds, and Ms. Emmylou are just a few who do spectacular versions of Bob’s classic material as well as some lesser known work. The tracklisting is great, the artists are spectacular and the performances are extraordinary. Buck Owens’ “Love Minus Zero/No Limit” might be the best thing on here, if it weren’t for Kitty Wells’ “you have to hear this to believe it” take of the anthemic “Forever Young” to close out the disc. I am not kidding when I say next to the Hank Sr. and Gram Parsons tribute CDs, this might be the best thing I’ve heard for a compilation.
Check this out, it seriously has not left my car stereo since I got it. Was this review helpful?
