| | | Features: DVD, Special Edition, Widescreen, Hi-fi Stereo This movie's so real, it's scary. This gripping film about a family of drug thieves is based on a novel by a convicted drug robber, a man who knows his subject well. Addicted husband and wife team, Bob and Diane Hughes (Matt Dillon, Kelly Lunch), and a younger couple of thieves resort to robbing drugstores to stay high. Still, in spite of this tragic lifestyle, they share moments of compassion and humor. The foursome skillfully skirt the law due to Bob's wits and superstitious nature until the day his luck begins to change. When his death appears inevitable, Bob realizes he must give up drugs and Diane to survive. "Fascinating... Standout performances." Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide
 Editor's Note
DRUGSTORE COWBOY was one of a group of films that led to the explosion of American independent cinema. Director Gus Van Sant generally maintains his highly stylized vision, regardless of a film's budget. His later films continue to illustrate the dreamlike moments contained in highly disturbing situations. The film captures a slice of Americana through the back door. Bob (Matt Dillon) is an energetic junkie who leads his wife (Kelly Lynch) and another couple on a reckless spree of drugstore robberies, for drugs. When he has a brush with death, Bob realizes he must leave both his addiction and his wife if he wants to survive. Van Sant's lush photography gives us a glimpse into these lives, lending immortality to people on the fringes of society. DRUGSTORE COWBOY is a classic film that launched the career of one of the most important American directors working today.

| | Professional Reviews | Rolling Stone "...Provocative..." 10/19/1989 p.29New York Times "...[DRUGSTORE COWBOY gives] Dillon the role of his career....A very impressive look into a dark subject..." 10/06/1989 p.C17 Los Angeles Times "...An electrifying movie without one misstep or one conventional moment....Van Sant has gotten hauntingly beautiful performances..." 10/11/1989 p.C1 Chicago Sun-Times 10 of 10 ...one of the best films in a long tradition of American outlaw road movies... it is the family feeling that makes Drugstore Cowboy so poignant and effective. This is not a movie about bad people, but about sick people... Like all truly great movies, Drugstore Cowboy is a joyous piece of work... It's a high-wire act of daring, in which this unlikely subject matter becomes the occasion for a film about sad people we come to care very deeply about. - Roger Ebert Washington Post 9 of 10 Nothing in the film seems too sharply defined, especially the characters, but that's a part of its charm... it dives into the characters' dead-end world view. This is a drug movie made from the inside out, by people who understand the life... Van Sant gives his material shape and an invigorating syncopated style. It keeps coming at you in surprising, dazzling ways. It jazzes you. - Hal Hinson
