 Editor's Note
Another entry into Hollywood's late-1990s onslaught of romantic comedies set in high school, starring Melissa Joan Hart as Nicole Maris, an attractive, well-liked student who is on the organizing committee for her school's upcoming Centennial Celebration. Adrian Grenier is Chase Hammond, Nicole's next-door neighbor and ex-buddy. Realizing that they might be dateless for such an important event, they decide to team up and convince everyone that they're dating, creating a burning jealousy that will most certainly send their real objects of desire running back to them with open arms.

| | Professional Reviews | New York Times "...[An] amiable, sensible style..." 10/01/1999 p.E18Los Angeles Times "...The movie is bouncy and catchy..." 10/01/1999 p.C14 Chicago Sun-Times "...What distinguishes DRIVE ME CRAZY from your average prom movie is that the characters are more intelligent and have dialogue written with a certain wit and insight..." 10/01/1999 p.32 San Francisco Examiner 0 of 10 Adapted by Rob Thomas from Todd Strasser's novel How I Created My Perfect Prom Date, the film has the good sense not to give in to these kids' belief that high school is cordoned off so that social spheres don't intersect... there's something sweetly retrograde about Nicole and Chase being dumped days before Centennial, then teaming up as a new couple to make their ex'es jealous. Hart and Grenier have a flirty who'da thunk it? chemistry ... It's fun watching her go nuts at a Donnas concert... Crazy - directed by John Schultz like that one kid who loves the cafeteria food so much, he convinces you it might be good--smudges the lines between the popular and the pariah-ed. - Wesley Morris San Francisco Chronicle 7 of 10 Drive Me Crazy succeeds in its modest way because its stars, Melissa Joan Hart and Adrian Grenier, are pleasant to be around. Decades ago, this is how 99 percent of movies functioned -- on charm and lots of it... Hart plays Nicole, a peppy preppy who is dateless for the school dance. Meanwhile Chase (played by handsome, sleepy-eyed Grenier) is a rebel whose girlfriend has just dumped him. So there is our setup. The two opposites agree to pose as boyfriend and girlfriend to incite jealousy in the people they are really interested in... films like this are not about getting somewhere but about enjoying a ride in good company. Both Hart...and Grenier...have sensitivity and a light, confident feel for comedy. That's enough. - Mick LaSalle
