Preeminent New York psychiatrist Dr. Nathan Conrad (Michael Douglas) has a successful Upper West Side practice, a beautiful wife (Famke Janssen) and a charming daughter. Making his way home to begin a tranquil Thanksgiving holiday, Conrad is summoned by a colleague to examine a young woman. Elisabeth Barrows (Brittany Murphy) presents a history of unexplained violence and a miasma of failed treatments and misdiagnoses. In short, Elisabeth is the kind of case Nathan used to live for before he went uptown. Now, he is Elisabeth's last chance before she is shipped of to the purgatory of state institutionalization. Nathan's skills and intuition make headway into Elisabeth's case, and his curiosity is further aroused by her mysterious first words to him: "You want what they want, don't you? I'll never tell... any of you." Little does Nathan suspect that Elisabeth and her cryptic message are tied to a danger that has closed in on him and his family. Nathan's daughter has been kidnapped by ruthless thieves, and to save her, he must somehow unlock a six-digit number locked away in Elisabeth's troubled mind. There is no discussion, no negotiation. With his daughter's captors watching his every move, Nathan is trapped in a nightmare even he could never have envisioned. When psychiatrist Nathan Conrad discovers that his daughter has been kidnapped, the only way he can get her back is to pry critical information from the mind of a seriously disturbed teenager with a secret stuck deep in a blocked memory. The Conrads are the prototypical happy family: Nathan, a successful doctor (Michael Douglas); his loving wife, Aggie (Famke Janssen), who is bedridden with a broken leg suffered in a skiing accident; and eight-year-old Jessie (Skye McCole Bartusiak), an extemely intelligent and well-loved young girl. But late one night Jessie is abducted and used as collateral for a dangerous group of men who will stop at nothing to recover a stolen ten-million-dollar jewel.Gary Fleder (KISS THE GIRLS) has crafted an excellent thriller shot on the streets of New York City, getting help from a fine supporting cast, including Oliver Platt as one of Dr. Conrad's medical colleagues, Jennifer Esposito as a cop out to get to the bottom of a series of unexplained murders, and Sean Bean as a violent criminal who will kill anyone who gets in his way. But this is Douglas's movie, starring as a loving family man and dedicated doctor who has to compromise his ethics in order to save his daughter's life and free a teenager from a dangerous psychosis.

He acts well, but I just can't buy into a 70 year old doing action shots. There are times that Douglas looks like something they found out in the woods in Ga. With that aside, this is one of the best suspence films in the last couple of years. While you seem to know where it's going, you don't know how they are going to get there. This one will keep you in your seat, and when its over, you will probably run it again. Was this review helpful?
