Notes & Personnel Info | | Collecting songs by Disney's stable of young female singer/actresses -- including teen queens Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan -- Disney Girlz Rock gathers the highlights from Disney movie soundtracks ranging from Freaky Friday to Ice Princess. There's not really much "rock" on the album; Lohan's "Ultimate" from Freaky Friday and "Drama Queen (That Girl)" from Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen -- both of which conjure visions of Avril Lavigne fronting Josie & the Pussycats -- are as about as close as the collection gets to rocking out, along with Caleigh Peters' slightly edgier "Reach." However, Aly & A.J.'s "Rush," Rayven-Symon?'s "This Is My Time," and the A-Teens' "Can't Help Falling in Love" show that there is life in teen pop beyond Britney, Jessica, and Mandy. "Reflection," the song from Mulan that launched Christina Aguilera's career, is another of Disney Girlz Rock's highlights. Though the collection is a little samey, it has enough fun and attitude to become a fitting slumber party soundtrack. ~ Heather Phares | | DISNEY GIRLZ ROCK is an onslaught of young girls, many carrying successful acting careers along with their music gigs, who rose up in the early years of the 21st Century and took pop radio by storm. The thread which ties this collection together is the connection of the tracks to popular Disney movies from 1998-2005. With a mix of clever covers and timeless classics, the compilation has a rousing blend of catchy, mostly upbeat (Christina Aguilera's aptly titled "Reflection" from MULAN being the lone exception) tunes from LILO & STITCH, THE ICE PRINCESS, A CINDERELLA STORY and other movies. | | The set opens with the A*Teens' dreamy rendition of the oft-covered "Can't Help Falling In Love" which is joined by covers of two other classics, the Duff Sisters' bouncy interpretation of the Go-Gos' "Our Lips Are Sealed" and Raven-Symone's bare-bones take on Stevie Wonder's "Superstition." Caleigh Peters' anthemic "Reach" soars majestically while Aly & AJ follow suit on the infectious "Rush." Myra closes the whole affair on the perfect pitch with the uplifting "Miracles Happen." DISNEY GIRLZ ROCK lives up to its name with an impressive array of teen rock. | Producer: Jay Landers (Compilation) |
