DIESEL TRUCKERS finds eccentric hip-hopper Kool Keith barreling down the highway in an 18-wheeler. Riding shotgun and spewing rhymes while producer Kutmasta Kurt mans the steering wheel, the former Ultramagnetic MC shuns his various alter egos (Dr. Octagon, Black Elvis) to deliver a straight-up rap record. The album begins with "Diesel Truckers Theme," as Keith drops automotive-themed metaphors over Kutmasta Kurt's gravelly beats. Fortunately, the subsequent 14 tracks don't get bogged down with references to the road, as DIESEL TRUCKERS is no novelty release. "Takin' It Back" pays tribute to Kool Keith's days growing up in New York City, "I Love You Nancy" is Keith at his most lyrically irreverent, and the radio-ready "Break U Off" finds the ladies' man on the prowl yet again. Although DIESEL TRUCKERS has mainstream crossover potential, Keith dismisses this objective in the biting "Bamboozled" (featuring Marc Live and Jacky Jasper), reminding listeners that this is an artist who continues to make music on his own terms.
