Editor's Note

Superhero cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) returns in DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE. Freshly expelled from the NYPD, McClane encounters a number of threatening phone calls from a terrorist calling himself Simon (Jeremy Irons). Simon tests McClane's wits, and allows him the chance to stop each bomb by solving a riddle. In addition to using his previously learned anti-terrorism tactics (DIE HARD, DIE HARD 2), McClane enlists an angry store clerk, Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson) to decipher Simon's tricky enigmas.

DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE finds director John McTiernan returning to the creative helm of the series he began in 1987 (Renny Harlin directed DIE HARD 2). For the third film in the detonative series, McTiernan creates a story line which floats from psycho terror to sonic action to interracial comedy relief. The acting is something to be marveled at as well. Bruce Willis miraculously evokes sympathy whilst playing the angry police man and Jeremy Irons' performance as the villainous Simon is reminiscent of an Eastern European James Bond megalomaniac. Samuel L. Jackson's is also worth mentioning as he gives an angry discourse in racism and then pops off one liners, both ice cold and slick.

Plot Summary

The third installment of the "Die Hard" series. Hard-luck New York cop John McClane realizes once again that trouble always has a way of finding him.| This time it comes in the form of Simon, whose brother Hans Gruber was the villainous mastermind killed by McClane in the first "Die Hard." Simon sets out to avenge Hans's death in a rather perverse manner: periodically, he plants a bomb somewhere in New York City (a subway car or an elementary school, for example). Then he calls McClane with a difficult riddle, and a time allotment for solving it. The answer to the riddle reveals the bomb site.| McClane and Zeus, a Black shopkeeper who saves McClane's life and then is forced to join him, wind up in numerous deadly situations as they continuously struggle to save the Big Apple from Simon's bombs. But Simon has other devious plans besides killing McClane: namely to rob the Federal Reserve Bank -- which houses more gold than Fort Knox...

Die Hard: With a Vengeance (2-Disc Special Edition) - DVD Review

I don't believe any future Die Hard could ever match the ruthless combo of brains, action and fun that Die Hard: With a Vengeance manages. It is the kind of film that could immediately drop the testicles of a foppish preteen boy, while at the same time preparing him for his SATs. This is action at its best, and twelve years later, we have to worry that they just can't make 'em like this anymore. ...read the full review

Die Hard. This time, it's personal. To make the long and extremely silly plotline of Die Hard With a Vengeance short, it breaks down like this. John McClane (Bruce Willis) is back in New York City where he's separated from his wife. The brother of Hans Gruber, from the original Die Hard, is out to get McClane and make some cash for himself in the process, bringing a pack of East German stooges with him to cause trouble. Add to this the character Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson), a Harlem shop owner, who becomes McClane's unlikely sidekick, and a whole lotta bombs exploding all over the city, and what do you get? Well, I still haven't figured that out....read the full review

"...A tense, terrifically funny action dazzler with a wow level in special effects that will be hard to top..." 06/15/1995 p.86-88

Variety
"...Crackling sound effects and spectacular stunt work....Jackson continues to impress, bringing ample humor to his character..." 05/22/1995

Chicago Sun-Times
"...DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE is basically a wind-up action toy, cleverly made, and delivered with high energy. It delivers just what it advertises, with a vengeance..." 05/19/1995 p.33

Variety 7 of 10
An overinflated mishmash that compels the audience to sift through a lot of rubble for the few requisite thrills, this second "Die Hard" sequel leaves a lot of creative wreckage in its wake. That said, even a subpar adventure won't kill this series, as the pic's built-in audience will make it a major summer attraction, if perhaps one lacking quite the stamina of the first two movies...McTiernan clearly has a flair for directing action but even that feels peculiarly flat for long stretches here, though there are several impressive sequences spread throughout the proceedings...Willis doesn't add much to his by-now familiar combination of wisecracking and heroism as McClane, but it's still a role uniquely suited to his talents. Jackson continues to impress, bringing ample humor to his character, who dives with remarkable speed and vigor into his life-threatening chores. - Brian Lowry

DVD Verdict 8 of 10
Die Hard With A Vengeance is a very good popcorn movie. That being said, it's probably the weakest of the three Die Hard movies. Even so, it's still a very well done action thriller with slick performances and stunts. Maybe the sole reason this doesn't stack up as high is that the premise has worn a bit sour. By 1995, there had been a lot of other action movies in this same vein, and with the inclusion of Samuel L. Jackson as a sidekick, Die Hard With A Vengeance starts to smack a bit of the Lethal Weapon series...Even though Die Hard With A Vengeance is the weakest link of the three films, it still gives lots of bang for your buck. Some of the plot holes are gaping (uh...someone explain to me how those trucks got to Canada again?), but you can't be picky when you get such a well oiled action movie. - Patrick Naugle
