 Editor's Note
A DVD twinbill from director Robert Rodriguez. El Mariachi, Rodriguez' Sundance Award-winning indie debut, highlights the un-asked-for adventures of a solitary would-be mariachi whose appearance in a small town sparks a lethal case of mistaken identity. In the big-budget sequel Desperado, the unnamed mariachi (Banderas this time) seeks an action-filled showdown with a notorious Mexican druglord and his platoon of henchmen.

5 of 5 Rodriguez could spin straw into gold Tuesday, August 13, 2002 Blake from Alexandria, VA
When I saw DESPERADO, I was amazed. Such gritty action. Such pulse-pounding action. And all of this was from the guy that made a movie for $7,000! The real story, for me, was the director's commentary where he explains a lot of the things they did to save money... LIKE PLAN... LIKE NOT HIRE TOO MANY STUNT MEN (same handful of stunt guys appear over and over and over)... LIKE EDIT (Where did Cheech go?)
This disc will give you much better insight into what it takes to make a film while letting you in on how much money the other guys WASTE!
This set is well worth it. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 DVD is worth it. Thursday, December 02, 1999 Parker Lewis from Richmond, CA
The two movies are pretty good. El mariachi is the better of the two, but Desperado is pretty fun.
There is some obvious Hong Kong action film influence, and Rodriguez basically acknowledges this later.
What makes these two DVDs worth getting is the extras.
You are given a couple of Rodriguez' short films, and he also narrates some commentary for his movie called 10 minute film school.
This is some great insight to the making of an indie film, and definitely worth a rent if not a buy. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Best Indy Ever! Monday, June 14, 1999 David from Bellflower, CA.
This is by far the best indi movie I have ever seen. I believe it was made for around 7k and has no overwhelming effects - but they are not needed. The story is what makes this film great - see it!
It'll make you a better critic of the movies that cost bazillions of dollars to make - it'll make you realize that millions of dollars of effects cannot make a bad story any better.
It's the story and the director that make it all really count - and this movie does it! Was this review helpful?
