3 of 5 Nice features but freezes up Thursday, May 22, 2008 A Customer from Oshkosh, WI
The Skyfi3 has some nice features and reception is great with the included Sureconnect.
Unfortunetly, the unit locks up about once a day in the "checking media" mode. I can usually get it going by resetting it several times but this is a hassle. Also, it takes a while to fire up so there is about 10 - 15 seconds of static if you left the radio on when you left the car.
Since I like the radio otherwise, I sent it back today and will try another one.
Don't plan on using it without the car plug or USB plug, the batteries have a life of less than 10 minutes. Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 Great for XM, poor for mp3 Friday, April 18, 2008 MLB Fanatic from Minneapolis, MN
If you're looking for a great XM player, this works. The nice big screen with variable orientation (portrait or landscape) allows you to see artist and song info at a glance and the replay/pause and recording features are excellent.
When you switch over to mp3, however, things get more interesting. The UI is severely lacking. If you want to play songs in a specific order, even an album you have loaded on the microSD card, you have to create a play list. You can't just play The Wall, for instance. The closest you can get without creating a play list is to go the the Pink Floyd artist area where the songs from all albums are commingled and in no order whatsoever.
This is the buggiest device I have ever had. I'd question if they did any kind of testing on it.
* the aforementioned unable to power up issue
* the channel list scrolls by itself sometimes
* the inability to set a recording date other than today's date
* inconsistencies in the favorites lists
* when the unit is pulled from the car cradle it shows paused
but the current position pointer keeps moving forward so when
you play again, it's either later in the song or on to one of
the next songs.
* when you start the unit in the car cradle in mp3 mode, there
is quite a bit of background white noise. However, if you
switch over to Live XM the noise goes away and you can switch
back to mp3.
I've had the device for about a year and figured they'd come out with an updated firmware rev, but I just checked and it's still the same one I updated to when I bought it.
Other notes:
* Battery life is acceptable - I can usually get a full day of
listening at work before it dies.
* Sound quality is really good, esp. with headphones.
* Car mount (I'm using the vent mount) is good
* If you use the FM transmitter, get the antenna adapter that
hooks between the car antenna and your stereo. Was this review helpful?
2 of 2 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 Does what it needs to do BUT.... Thursday, September 27, 2007 Gene Sentell from Queens, NY
I bought the Skyfi3 as a replacement for my Skyfi2 which didn't survive a drop from the fourth floor of my apartment (bad catch on my part). I like the elegant black and gold finish and the unit's ability to save and record music, particularly when equipped with an inexpensive micro SD memory card. It is not without some shortcomings. Why did they have to use a different PS and connector from the SA2? It would have been easier to upgrade without such an unnecessary change. A bigger complaint is the occasional unresponsiveness of the controls on the unit AND the remote. Finally occasionally the unit becomes unable to power-up. The remedy, pressing the Mode and volume switch is easy enough - but this happens enough to give it a more prominent place in the instruction manual. All in all I like the unit - but it is not perfect. Was this review helpful?
