Notes & Personnel Info | | The Deke Down Under EP is a limited pressing that contains a compact disc and vinyl 7" of identical material. These are actually studio tracks, not live tracks, as the title might lead you to believe, and finely recorded ones at that. The tracks pop with a vintage analog ambience that suits Deke Dickerson's well-traveled, old-time rock & roll muse well. Graeme Thomas, who has made a name for himself producing rockabilly acts Down Under in his retro-fitted studio, does a fine job with Dickerson's performances, from the jump-swing of "Hey Worm," to the rockin' intro stroll of "Eefin' Rock" to the countrified rock & roll bounce of "My Baby Don't Love Me Anymore" to the fuel-injected rockabilly of "Cut Loose." Dickerson is in fine form here, and the vintage production and the backing of his Australian touring band add a bright, clear and tight vibe. (Also, Dickerson's top-notch guitar work and versatile vocals are out front, where they ought to be.) In limited release, this one is hard to get a hold of, as is his performance with Los Straitjackets of Gene Pitney's "Town Without Pity" and Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation," which appear on a Straitjackets 7" and also on that band's Play Favorites album. Nevertheless, for fans of Dickerson, this scarce EP and those hard-to-find Los Straitjackets records (with Dickerson as prominent guest) are worth seeking out. ~ Erik Hage |
