From the writers and director of Saw comes a new thriller of relentless terror! Ever since Mary Shaw was hunted down and killed, the small town of Ravens Fair has been haunted by horrific deaths. When a local's wife is brutally murdered, he returns home to unravel the terrifying legend of Mary Shaw and the reason why when you see her, you should never, ever scream. Editor's Note
Old ladies, ventriloquist dummies, decrepit small-towns, and dolls are all exploited for their full creepy potential in DEAD SILENCE, a relatively innocent but thoroughly scary horror feature from the makers of SAW. After a heavily stylized black-and-white opening credit sequence that shows the story's central ghost, Mary Shaw, constructing her beloved ventriloquist dolls back in her heyday, the film transports viewers to the present. As newlyweds Jamie (Ryan Kwanten) and Lisa Ashen putter lovingly about their apartment far from their hometown of Raven's Fair, it is clear that something bad is about to happen. This dread is only further cemented when a knock on the door leads the lovebirds to discover an unmarked box containing a worn but eerily lifelike ventriloquist's dummy. Lisa is all too friendly towards the doll and gets what's coming to her when Jamie goes out to pick up some takeout, returning to find his wife's mangled body (minus her tongue) propped up like the dummy seemingly responsible for her death. With detective Jim Lipton (Donnie Wahlberg) on his heels, and a very guilty dummy in his passenger seat, grieving Jamie returns to Raven's Fair with the hunch that his wife's death is linked to the town's murdered ventriloquist, Mary Shaw. Once grand, Raven's Fair is now in a state of decay, and many of its inhabitants have died mysterious and brutal deaths in the years since Jamie was last home. Jamie arrives at his wealthy father's home, only to find a young new bride (Amber Valetta) by his side. No one wants to talk about Mary Shaw, let alone whisper her name. If Jamie is going to get to the bottom of the Mary Shaw legend, he'll have to face the town's past on his own. Arriving in the midst of the gore/torture trend (SAW, HOSTEL), DEAD SILENCE comes as a breath of fresh air. It's nice to see that a horror movie can still use gore with discretion and deliver a fright through old-fashioned scare tactics and a premise as simple as a ghost story.

| Dead Silence - DVD Review By: Daniel J. Stasiewski - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 6/25/2007 12:05 PM | | Dead Silence certainly isn’t the movie I expected from the director of Saw. It’s a solid, slightly more sophisticated horror film, one that I imagine director James Wan was thinking of making when he got his big break with the gruesome, albeit groundbreaking Saw. In fact, it was bold move, making a ghost story when hyper-graphic horror films are all the rage....read the full review |

| | Professional Reviews | SlasherPool.com 5 of 10 Oh James. Fog? Curses? Legends? Ghosts? Killer dummies? Lanterns? Locals killing a woman when a child goes missing? What? Did you just look up the word horror movie on google and see what words came up?...Not even the creators of Saw managed to come up with something fresh. I think we can safely say that there's been an inflation of horror flick recently and while James Wan may have breathed some fresh new life into the genre, I'm pretty sure he's also going to be the death of the ghost genre for a while...I'm really hoping that James Wan only made this to kill off the ghost genre for a while before it gets completely out of hand because Dead Silence was a ridiculously generic trip which felt way too familiar. Dead Silence will leave the audience silent as there is nothing to scream about, except for perhaps the lackluster and thin story-line.

4 of 5 Kept you guessing, and Ryan Kwanten is HOT! Thursday, August 09, 2007 jws_shopping from Throop, PA
First off, I have to admit, I am a horror movie fan. I get some fun even out of the bad ones. I remember wanting to see this when it was in the theaters, but there were other things going on that prevented that. So I was pretty hyped when the DVD release date was announced. I pre-ordered it and the day it came, I watched it. I was confident I was going to like it since it was directed by the same guy who did SAW, and I was not disappointed. There were many clues to how it was going to end along the way, but they were very subtle, and I didn't catch them the first time I watched it.

I definitely recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys a good scare!!

A few coments on the actors:

Ryan Kwanten is HOT!!
The atire they dressed him in made him even hotter to look at. The only disappointment, was that they didn't rate the movie R so they could have added a hot sex scene where we could see his beautiful body. If you find yourself drooling of over him while you are watching the movie, make sure you google this hunk afterwards. You won't be disappointed at the images you find. This young Aussie has no problems taking his clothes off for the cameras.

Donnie Wahlberg is solid.
This is the second horror flick that I've seen him in. SAW 2 and this one. Interestingly, he played a police investigator in both films. He is definitely believable, and pulls off his dialog without a problem. He has certainly come a long way from his days with 'New Kids on the Block. I didn't google him after the movie, because I'm not sure if I want to see him nude, now his brother is a different story. :o)

One last thing.. watch the deleted scenes, some of them explain some of the holes in the plot. I don't know if I would trust the editors if it was my film. I think I would rather edit it myself.
