Six friends on their way to a wedding in Galveston, TX stop for the night at a quaint bed and breakfast in the sleepy town of Lovelock. But after a night that ends with both the inn's owner and his chef dead, the gang finds themselves under suspicion by the local sheriff. The mystery quickly unravels when the already bizarre residents of the town become possessed by an evil spirit and pin the friends down at the b&b. Armed with a rusty chainsaw, a can of gasoline and a half box of shotgun shells, they must barricade the house and fight for their lives.

A horror-comedy that uses zombies for laughs, as in UNDEAD and SHAUN OF THE DEAD, DEAD AND BREAKFAST combines a familiar scenario with unique elements and a cast of well-known performers. A group of friends on their way to a wedding get lost in the vast Midwest, and are forced to stop for the night. The friendly innkeeper, Mr. Evans (David Carradine), shows them to their rooms then promptly drops dead the next day, forcing the group to stay in town during the investigation. But while the police do their work, a mysterious force sweeps the town, turning its residents into monstrous ghouls with a taste for human flesh. Starring Portia de Rossi, Jeremy Sisto, and Ever Carradine (David's niece), DEAD AND BREAKFAST innovates with a chapter structure punctuated by country music written especially for the film, including a number with the dancing undead.

It's tempting to call it last year's "Cabin Fever," since it's yet another slasher-film send-up that will appeal to horror fans who like their killings done with a wink and a chainsaw. But "Dead & Breakfast" isn't the straight-faced, crossover-aspiring homage that "Cabin Fever" was. Instead, Matthew Leutwyler's romp is a way-over-the-top parody that aims to be as comically direct as a homemade shotgun. Writer-director Matthew Leutwyler keeps tongue planted firmly in cheek throughout, but the film's attempts at humor mostly sputter. It may be a cute idea, for example, to have a down-home country troubadour serve as the film's singing narrator, but by the time he's reduced to rapping a threatening song while zombies line-dance, the gag has long since worn out its welcome. The film tries to make up in bloodshed what it lacks in suspense, but all the plasma in Texas can't produce scares in a vacuum. In a self-conscious moment late in the action, one character says she feels like she's in a bad horror movie. No kidding. It's no more rewarding being on the other side of the screen. - Nathan Rabin
