Author Bio
Julius Caesar
The great Roman emperor and general, Gaius Julius Caesar, is also remembered as a prominent historian. His most famous works are his COMMENTARIES, comprised of the seven-volume DE BELLI GALLICI, about his campaign in Gaul (modern-day France), and the three-volume DE BELLI CIVILI, which records his rivalry with and, in 45 B.C., ultimate defeat of Pompey.( Whereas writings on the war in Africa were once attributed to Caesar, they are now attributed to his subordinates.) For generations in the English-speaking world, his military histories have been read and translated by students, many of whom have had to memorize such lines as "Omnis Gallia in tres partes divisa est," ("All Gaul is divided into three parts") which opens THE CONQUEST OF GAUL. His writings, marked by an economy of language, employ intentionally plain rhetorical strategies, and they provide insights into how and why Rome's armies were able to conquer much of the known world of Caesar's time. The generally agreed-upon date for Julius Caesar's birth is 100 B. C. E., although variant dates are sometimes cited. Born into a patrician family, Caesar rose through the ranks to positions of political and military power. He gained power through alliances with enemies and eventually became dictator of Rome. He was assassinated in 44 B.C. on the Ides (15th) of March. Of course, he lives on as the central character in one of the great tragedies of William Shakespeare.
