As Grisman puts it in his liner notes, these encounters are a matter of musical "symmetries," in which his partners range considerably in style and range. From Indian tabla authority Zakir Hussain to septuagenarian bluegrass fiddler Vassar Clements to 11-year-old (!) jazz guitar prodigy Julian Lage, this collection is a testament to Grisman's latitude as a musician. | | The whimsically titled "Mando-Bass Boogie Sonata" features Edgar Meyer's deft, deep-register bowing as he and Grisman trade solos in a chamber-bluegrass setting. "Clinch Mountain Windmills" is a melding of Michel Legrand's "Windmills of Your Mind" with a Ralph Stanley tune, where Bela Fleck's banjo-picking travels from the staccato folk of old Russia to the rolling hills of Kentucky. "Mandoharp Fantasy" is a lovely little folk piece, with Grisman picking and strumming the melody over Bryan Bowers' crisp, sweet autoharp playing, only to have the two then trade places. Django Reinhardt's "Anouman" is pure jazz melancholy with Denny Zeitlin at the piano, whereas "Mule Skinner Blues," with Vassar Clements, is brief, rowdy fun. | Producer: David Grisman | Musical Guests | | Bela Fleck | | Bryan Bowers | | Zakir Hussain | | Edgar Meyer | | Mark O'Connor |
