| | The Dark Side of The Moon by Pink Floyd was released on March 24 1973, and since, has become one of the most succesful albums of all time, selling in excess of 35 million copies worldwide. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this classic and groundbreaking album, The Dark Side of The Moon has been re-issued as a Hybrid SACD combining a remastered stereo version, and, for the first time ever, a mindblowing 5.1 Surround Sound mix.
This Super Audio CD (SACD) features two disc layers. Layer one contains a standard version of the Pink Floyd masterpiece that works on any CD player. Layer two includes high-resolution stereo and a 5.1 surround version that works on SACD-compatible DVD players and home theater systems. Both layers employ SACD's Direct Stream Digital (DSD) encoding process that samples the music 64 times faster than CD for unprecedented fidelity.
The SACD format will also feature updated artwork of this classic album sleeve from original designer Storm Thorgerson.
| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. | | Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, keyboards); Roger Waters (vocals, bass instrument); Nick Mason (percussion). | | Additional personnel: Clare Torry (vocals); Dick Parry (saxophone); Doris Troy, Lesley Duncan, Liza Strike, Barry St. John (background vocals). | | Recording information: Abbey Road Studios, London, England. | | DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was a benchmark record. It turned the musical world on its ear with a hitherto unseen combination of sounds, and changed things considerably for Pink Floyd. For this project, Pink Floyd resurrected older and unfinished numbers, some of which came from the multitude of soundtracks the band members had previously worked on. The film ZABRISKIE POINT, a study of American materialism from a foreigner's perspective, provided "Us and Them" (originally titled "The Violence Sequence"). Waters rewrote "Breathe" after its appearance on his and avant-garde composer Ron Geesin's score for THE BODY, a surreal medical documentary. | | Floyd and their long-time engineer, Alan Parsons, used a multitude of sound effects--from stereophonically projected footsteps and planes flying overhead ("On the Run") to a roomful of ringing clocks ("Time"). Further adding to the record's mystique, barely audible spoken passages were sprinkled throughout--a result of hours interviewing random Abbey Road occupants about their views on insanity, violence, and death. Floyd must have struck a nerve: DARK SIDE OF THE MOON remained on Billboard's albums chart for an astounding 14 years. It made Pink Floyd a household name, elevating them to the level of the Rolling Stones and The Who in the rock pantheon. |

5 of 5 Great experience w/SACD Tuesday, April 24, 2007 A Listener from Columbus, OH
This is my first SACD, and I'm delighted with the product. I also have DVD-Audio, and I'd say the results are comparable. After all these years, this was like hearing Dark Side for the first time. This material really works well in a multi-channel environment. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Too good to be true, you have to hear it. Tuesday, November 14, 2006 massimj from Jensen Beach, FL
I read the comments by one of the other reviewers, and that got me to buy this SACD of The Dark Side of the Moon. The other SACD titles I bought were pretty good, but this album leaps and bounds better than even the original Dark Side of the Moon. The 5.1 seperation of the tracks is right on. You will want to sit back in a dark room and close your eyes to get the full effect. The sound is bigger, bolder, and awesome. Not bad for a 30 year old album that has sold more copies than any other album, and continues to sell. If you are a Floyd fan, you have to have this. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Like hearing it for the first time Monday, December 26, 2005 A Listener from Winchester, Va
I bought the original as an LP when it came out in the 70's and like everyone else I loved this album (and still have it tucked away as a keepsake). When I got my new surround system and SACD player this was my first purchase and I wasn't disappointed. The music was amazingly clear and the multi-channel terrific with Pink Floyd's many sound effects. Be sure to listen to this one at night ....with the lights out! Was this review helpful?
2 of 2 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 the best version yet Wednesday, April 09, 2003 spencer from tulsa, ok
I own a copy of Dark Side of the Moon on vinyl and also the 20th aniversary, and the don't compare to the first time you sit down and experience it in suround sound. I love the vinyl version the way it fills a room with sound, but it nothing like having sounds come from everywere. If you love Pink Floyd and Dark Side of the Moon, buy this and if yo need to a Super Audio CD system to be totally blow away. Was this review helpful?
